There are several organizations for luthiers and frankly right now I can't afford to belong to all of them.  Can someone advise me as to the relative merits of belonging to GAL, ASIA, and others that I may not know about?  Much appreciated!

Hi Ricardo, they both have their merits, ASIA is a member run organization while GAL is privately run. I have been to both of their Symposiums and they are both awesome. GAL has a larger membership but ASIA seems to be growing from a recent decline in membership. Both have great archives of
articles that are a tremendous resource. GAL has 4 massive books that can be purchased at a discount for members. If you plan on attending a symposium in the near future GAL has one next June in Tacoma. You really can't go wrong with either but both is always preferred.
Hope this helps,
Evan

Hesh, didn't we also get membership in GAL with our subscription to OLF?

You could alternate them year by year. E.g., join the GAL for 2008 and go to the convention in Tacoma. Then do ASIA the year after that. If you can only afford one as time goes on, and you want to choose, you could make that choice after trying them both.

GAL conventions are fantastic. Not to be missed.

Since I live in Seattle, I will definitely be going to the GAL convention in TAcoma in 2008.

OOPS, My bad. I just found out that my wife paid my dues to GAL without me knowing.
