Hello All,

Got my first repair job! Well, its not really a job, because I won’t be actually getting paid.
I figured I could use the experience, so, I told my friend, I would donate my time, if he would buy
all the parts. I did warn him of my very limited repair experience. Uhhh, actually, I have no experience.
Yet, to my amazement, he still wanted me to do the work. Go figure!

Anyway, I sure could use some help with this. It’s a Jackson performer PS-37. And, it needs a lot
of work. The pics below will give you an idea of what I need to do. First, I should say, that the
neck is totaled! It has an approximate 1/4" back bow in it, with a nasty twist that I’m sure would
be impossible get out, and the splice of the neck is starting to come apart. Second, I’m sure there
are at least 2 parts missing. 1. The nut. 2. Some kind of base plate that would be positioned under
the bridge. Have no idea what you would call this part.

A brand new neck has been purchased, and is in route. I have to tell you, it was not easy to find a
Jackson neck. The only one I could locate was on Ebay for $94.40 delivered from Online
instruments. It comes complete with polished frets, and, inlayed fretboard. No nut, and no tuners.
I still thought that was a very good price though.

After you view the pictures, you may find yourself thinking. Perhaps I should tell my friend that it
is not worth repairing. I did! And, he said, “this guitar means a lot to me” then I said, “OK, I ‘ll do it”

Any advise would be greatly appreciated, Thanks

Robert

Well, I figure if you can parade around in pink panties, with a towel wrapped around your head,
singing the theme to the flying nun. I can surely park my repair parts on a pink towel!

firstly, did you try to loosen the truss rod before you decided to get a new neck. secondly, did you comtemplate straightening the neck if loosening the truss rod did not achieve the desired result. just part of the repair process. it's hard to tell from the photo but it looks like a flatsawn neck, and neither may work, but they are things you should always consider.

it looks as though you have a floyd rose or fr clone bridge to deal with. unless you can find out from manufacturers marks or from jackson what is is, finding parts becomes problematical. similarly with the locking nut. in any event, when the setup time comes you are in for an interesting time.

Robert,
Give me a call if you like, this weekend. I built custom electrics at Carruthers for 6 years.
I'll help you as much as I can.

Best,
Paul

Hey Michael,

I sort of figured I was in for, at least, what could be considered, a very daunting task.
However, I’m up for the challenge!

As for the neck, you are correct, it is flat sawn. It’s a two piece neck, with the joint around the
first and second fret. Its cut on what appears to be a 60 degree angle, and right on the back of the
neck, the joint is starting to come apart. Also, the frets are worn down pretty badly.
I did consider what you suggested, but, it seemed more economical sense to just get a new neck.

I guess I’m in for some serious research for parts.

Paul,

Thanks for offering your help! you have a pm.

Kim,

I’ve seen “ONYA” around a few times, but, I’m clueless to what it means! Could ya help me out mate?

Thanks to all, and a special thanks to Hesh! For reminding me that only real guitar builders can use PINK!

Robert

au slang for "on you"...

when preceded by good, as in "good onya", is a compliment as in "well done".

Probably the last thing on your mind but...I'll buy that neck from your friend for $20 Plus postage...at least it will help defray some of the cost of the new one.

Dave,

Thanks for the offer! That sounds fine to me, but, are you sure you want mess with it? It’s beat up
pretty badly. I could try to take some more close up pics if you like?

Robert

If you want to take more pics that's fine. It didn't look all that bad in those you posted. What was the owner going to do with it? If he's just going to trash it...well maybe I'll just pay for postage and if it's unusable I'll just hang it on the wall or something.
Please email me at skg@siestskeyguitars.com

THANKS!
