Great old video of Segovia playing Asturias (Leyenda) on youtube.

I'm guessing the guitar is a Ramirez... toward the end you get a brief shot at the headstock.

My teacher currently has me working on some Albeniz, specifically Asturia,Cadiz and Seville (I'm obsessed with Terrega and I think he is trying to broaden my horizons), so it was great to see the master playing it.

Segovia does make it look easy, but then he is Segovia!

That is a great video, and man, he sure has fat fingers and weird thumb position. Here's another great video of that piece with even better technical execution and musical interpretation, IMHO.

I know just what you mean about Tarrega...

My teacher (classical) says that to fall in love with the guitar (or to have someone fall in love wuth you), play Tarrega. To show you can play clear notes, play Bach or Dowland. To show that you can hear and play Spanish guitar, play Albeniz.

Because I play flamenco also, I asked him (a classical teacher), "And what about Flamenco...where does that fit?" to which he replied, "I guess that if you need to unleash your passion or angst, there is probably no more powerful outlet than Flamenco"...

Shawn, to me the sound of Tarrega is sublime, my teacher at the RCM comes from Gibraltar originally and it's in his blood. I'm currently building a Torrse copy specifically for Tarrega or should I say that Joshua is building one by proxy he is giving me so much advice. I want to capture the feeling of the Seville sun on my back.

I've recently recorded a complete Dowland suite on guitar, I usually play it on the lute of course, but when playing classical guitar Dowland and Purcell are my comfort zones that I retreat to when the Tarrega is not going well, that's most of the time!

This August at the Romanillos class we are building a Romanillos plantilla but with a Torres SE bracing pattern.

I am working on a Torres FE08 copy so Joshua inspires me as well...If I decide to build it with a Tornavoz, Joshua is the first person I will contact.

That was great Ron.  It is good to see the "Old Man" playing that.  Hard to understand how he became such a master with those hands.  I have the Segovia Book that has close-ups of his playing hands, and I stare at the pictures in wonder.

I too am a Tarrega fan, Shawn & Colin, but don't play much solo stuff these days.  Something I need to work on.   My guitar ensemble does play a couple of Dowland pieces and some Purcell arranged for multiple guitars. Most of our stuff is Renaissance Period, though, since the focus  of our performing is at the Ren. Fest. here in the Charlotte area.

Waddy, there's some of my lute music on the forum if you search for it. I much prefer to play the Northern European music on the lute and the Southern European on the guitar. I do play solo mostly but I am a member of a consort of tutors and senior students at the RCM, where I play lute and also lute continuo. I tend to think of myself as a lute player and Spanish guitar player. (Actually an old steel string player who just wings it!)

I understand.  It is all for fun, for me.  Didn't start playing until I was almost 40, then didn't know what I wanted to play.  Had a pretty good teacher that was versatile, and let me find my niche.  I gravitated to classical.  She then got me interested in playing in an ensemble before I could even read much.  Did wonders for my sight reading.  Our group has a good time.  The RenFest thing, though, is a big commitment, 7 weekends in a row gone.  The Honey Do list grows dramatically during that period.  Our group is called The Rosewood Guild.

That is cool.  Williams should have loaned some of that hair to Bream.  I see Bream is playing his Romanillos in that clip.  Wonder what Williams is playing - Fleta, maybe?  Only got one glimpse of the headstock, and I couldn't tell.
