Yeah, come on in.  It is really great in here.  Being a subscriber is way worth it.

I'm often on the OLF as a guest because I can't get my computer to "remember" to keep me logged in here. I don't know how many others do this, but it could be a factor.

Nevertheless, it would be nice to have you lurkers join us!

The forum software doesn't seem to log us off for inactivity (which is good- thanks!) so it will show people online for days/weeks if they don't deliberately log off. Like the total number of members (many inactive), it gives a bit of a misleading idea of the activity around the OLF. Since it doesn't cause any serious 'overhead', I'd think it's a non-issue.

I just thought I'd mention this in case some of you folks think I spend 24/7 glued to the keyboard watching OLF posts!

Cheers

John

I often come and look in on the forum without logging on, so would appear as a guest. I always log off when leaving the forum. Usually I'll only log on if I have a post to make and once a day to check for PMs. So, don't assume that all of the 'non-members' are in fact non-members!

We really do have a very small forum you know.

Here is a screen shot from the landcruiser forum I'm on a bit, notice the number of "lurkers/spiders"

Is this true??    I've NEVER Logged-Off. I guess I thought when I went off-line, I would be logged-off.

SO... Have I been listed as an active user since October?

I do not believe this to be true. The reason why is I never log-off at work, Just go off-line. When I get to my house and and pull up the site it does not show me in the logged-on member's list.

That said if I do not log on at the house and go back to work and pull up the site I do not have to go through the log-in process to be logged-on.

However if I did log-in at home and not log-out when i went off-line, I would have log-in at work the next day.

So I believe if you go off-line without logging-out you will no longer appear in the logged on members list. But because of the cookies if you go on-line from the same computer it reestablishes you as logged in.

Michael-
Thanks for the correction.
I've just done a few 'tests' here at home and have established only one fact: I don't have a clue what's going on with the login situation!
I'm logged in, using Firefox.
The user list shows me logged in, using IE.
I fired up another computer here at home and went to the OLF site, using IE. The guest list (viewed from the second computer) doesn't show me logged in at all. I think I may be listed as a guest on that second computer's screen, but it's hard to tell.
Who knows what y'all out there are seeing?

Anyway, I don't think it matters a lot.
I DO know that I should be in the shop, hiding mistakes, not typing at the keyboard!
Cheers
John

I think there is a session variable that gets reset everytime you request a page. When it times out you are not currently "logged in" but the system remembes you when you come back so you don't have to type your userid and password in again.

So there is kind of 2 levels of "logged in"
