Hesh, You're probably actually seeing the image in reverse so to speak. I think it's more of the cross eyed method of viewing them. (Objects that would normally be 3D poping out would be more like a cut out window).

You're correct in how the airplane is orientated, but you can also adjust your eyes to see it as a 3D airplane poping out from the background.
