Dalbergia baroni (Palisander Rosewood)
Dalbergia brownei (Coin Vine)
Dalbergia cearensis (Kingwood)
Dalbergia cochinchinensis (Siamese Rosewood)
Dalbergia ecastaphyllum (Coinvine)
Dalbergia decipularis (Tulipwood)
Dalbergia frutescens
Dalbergia latifolia (Indian Rosewood, Sonokeling)
Dalbergia melanoxylon (African Blackwood)
Dalbergia monetaria (Moneybush)
Dalbergia nigra (Brazilian Rosewood, Jacaranda)
Dalbergia retusa (Cocobolo)
Dalbergia sissoo (Sheesham, Sissoo)
Dalbergia stevensonii (Honduras Rosewood)

If it is not in that list, I think you have indeed "stumped the band."

Dennis
p.s. Actually, though it does not look like Cocobolo, that's probably a good bet.

Hesh - no.
Kim - no.
Bob - no.
Dennis - none of the above.
Ken - no.

One more clue...

It IS a dalbergia, but an obscure one. It's not from North America, South America, Asia, Africa, Antarctica, Europe, India, the Middle East, Australia or any island of some coast of somewhere else.

Wow, this is bringing Sam to fits of anger!
Maybe I'd better just tell everyone?

Last hint...

It's not from North or South America. Maybe, just maybe....somewhere in between.

Dennis is half right.

It's Guatemalan Rosewood, dalbergia cubiquitzensis.

It's light weight, similar to Brazilian, the color is similar to a cross between Honduran and Madrose when dry, but when under a finish can look much like Brazilian. It taps great, light weight, and machines very easily. I cut through 10" like it was butter. Well, almost.

Burton Legeyt's guitar pictured above sounded fantastic, and ended up being a lot lighter in weight than you would expect from a rosewood guitar.

I'll show a picture of this set wet with naptha over the next couple of days when I get a chance.

Bent grained aster wood . ALso know as the Mya wanna buya cantafforda . This is indigenous to the dry part of the Mexican drizzle forest. Long dark days during the summer make for perfect growing conditions. Termites refuse to eat this wood as it is too pretty. The Very rare and last heard of was banned by SITES and MYTES.
Wife said one more piece of rare wood and she would make me turn it into the bird house I promised.
