I was wondering if anyone here had some recommended reading for someone with an interest to learn more about the woods used in guitar building. Not necessarily as specific as tonal qualities, but maybe a reference that gives genus, region, identifying characteristics, and things of that nature.

With the wealth of knowledge here on the OLF, I wouldn't be surprised if someone here had written this book! But hopefully someone has some recommendations.

It's not a book but you might check out

They have lots of great resources. And they are right down the street from me to boot.

Lutherie Woods and Steel String Guitars from GAL.

and something that's not exactly what you're looking for

The Wild Trees about free climbers who climb 350ft redwoods.

Understanding Wood and Identifying Wood by Bruce Hoadley are two of the best books about wood published. Look these up on the web and try to find them for sale - it's worth it.

As John says...I have Understanding Wood and it's great. It's not related to instruments but has a wealth of information about wood and its characteristics.

I would third Hoadley's Understanding Wood. Very interesting read and more than you might ever want to know about wood in general.

Another one I might recommend is A Guide to Useful Woods of the World by James H. Flynn, Jr. and Charles D. Holder (both of the International Wood Collectors Society). Recently they have released a second book: A Guide to More Useful Woods of the World.

These books highlight scientific names, family, other names, distribution, the tree, the timber, seasoning, durability, workability, uses, supplies, etc...
