Hi Everyone, I've had a great time lurking this sight. It's obviously the best luthier forum on the net. I only have one problem. With my dial up service it seems to take forever to navigate the site. Maybe impatience comes with age. Any suggestions or am I just stuck with this?

Hi Ken-
Have you tried using the "Active Topics" view?
you will find a button at the top of the page, under the ad's.
You can select how maybe days back you want to load when you refresh.

You can try using a browser like firefox. I find that I can negotiate the site much better with tab browsing. It sure beats hitting the back button all the time.

Hello Ken, This is a good place to hang out. I have the same problem with Dial-Up. As Lance said the active topics work a lot faster for me. But when I click on a thread with a lot of big image files, that is when things really slow down. Sometime it will take 5 minutes or more to load a discussion.

It's something we will have to live I guess. No such thing as DSL where I live.

Welcome to the forum, Ken. I have dial up too. DSL is only about two miles down the road, but probably won't make it to my house. I've had dial up for 10 years so I'm used to it. I just play solitaire while things load.

I love the look of this forum, though, and Lance, don't do anything to change it.

Firefox does work much better, and I too have switched to active topics useage. I spend MUCH less time looking for new stuff and waiting for stuff to load.

Interesting, I used to have dial-up with NetZero, and it wasn't that slow. Now I have dsl and it breezes through rel quick. I wonder why some dial-ups are so much faster than others?

Internet Explorer can do tabbed browsing as well if you download the MSN plug-in. Additionally Internet Explorer has third party, no cost add-ins such as Avant that have provided tabbed browsing for the last 3 years.

Internet Explorer 7.0 provides tabbed browsing, integrated RSS and other features and can be downloaded in its beta version from microsoft.com.

The next version of Windows client, Windows Vista is also available in beta and can be downloaded and has Internet Explorer 7.0 (with tabbed browsing) integrated into the operating system. Windows Vista beta 2 will be out in the next month or so. Windows Vista will ship in the second half of next year.

My guess is that once you have all of the images cached it makes things "seem" much faster.

You hit it on the head...there are a number of dial-up providers that offer things to speed up dialup connections. The way that most work is by eliminating some of the un-needed graphics on web pages and by caching the common images on frequently viewed pages so that it loads faster. It is not that the dialup connection is faster, it is that the web browsing is slightly faster because of less graphics per page and from some being cached.

There is no way to increase the actual bandwidth of dial-up connections beyond 56k as that is the limitation of dialup modems and has been so for about ten years now.

Hi John, no I haven't sold the painted guitar...yet, but I just got through fixing up my website (even with my slow dial-up) so maybe it will get some exposure. I almost put it in an art gallery, maybe I still will. It was great sharing the table with you. Did you ever get the yard cleaned up? What are you working on now?
