I am shopping for a wide belt sander for thickness sanding. Please share your likes / dislikes if you are using one now. Belt life? No feedback on drum sanders please. TIA...

The new 18" Grizzly has been getting some great reviews. If memory serves, I think Sylvan has one. A couple folks at ASIA mentioned how much they liked them.

Now you DO realize that if you buy one of these you will NEVER get rid of me... right?   

I am not sure if you are aware of this or not, but Wood Werks on the east side of Columbus has several of these in stock. You can go down there and kick the tires (to some extent) and possibly save yourself some shipping costs.

They have several shop fox models and maybe a couple of others.

Thanks Brock, I might have to plan a road trip. Supposed they would mind if I brought along a couple dozen sets of really dark, oily EIRW to test them with?

Don: That is the model I was considering but was hoping to find some feedback from users / owners.

Have fun and give us a report.[/QUOTE] John, I am having a hard time justifying it BUT I think I have convinced myself ;) I only have so many hours to spend in the shop and once I set down at the drum sander I am there for HOURS. I just can't start a piece through and then go do something else. You are litterally tied to it until you are done. I just have to believe that a belt sander has to be faster and more effiecient.

No, the 18" wide belt Grizzly sander is not listed in the tools link but I wish it was. Hint, hint Brock.

I've thought about buying one for years...just don' have the room. I have
to keep my big bandsaw in a different shop...so for now I'm stuck with my
delta drum sander...which does the job just fine, but a wide belt sander
does make a job MUCH faster...

Tim,
John Monteleone has the Grizzly 18" and James Goodall has the 24" Grizzly.
I emailed both of them and asked their opinion and they both had only good things to say about them.
I have always wanted one.I will get one one day.

Tim and I talked by phone this morning so I won't rehash what we talked
about. Suffice to say that I have had the Grizzly 18" for a year now and I
would buy it again in a heartbeat. Its' efficiency far outweighs its' cost!Sylvan38673.4299537037
