I have never used any type of dyes or stains to tint nitro. I was wondering which ones are the most prefered by those who spray colored lac's both transparent and solid color.

Transtint/StewMac Colortone stains are really quite lovely, and will tint pretty much anything (laquer, waterbased stuff, etc.)

I've never done real solid colours, so I can't comment on those.

The Transtint stains can also be found at your local Woodcraft stores. That can be handy if you are in the middle of something and need more to finish the job.

I also use the transtint from SM. Works great. Much better than staining the wood...IMO. Only problem is if you sand thru...

Hey, I also use 'em (Transtint) to stain the wood direct. Works a charm. Only on electrics/maple, though. Hand-rubbed finishes are a very specific look, very different from tinted laquer. Check out some of David Myka's work for some excellent examples of hand-rubbed stains.
