I was going to mention Osage orange but Al beat me to it. It does have a tap tone very much in the Brazilian camp and though I have never built with it I am sure it would make a great sounding guitar. As an added bonus, it is very durable in contact with the ground. There are some old OO fence posts on my property that are still sound and they have been in the ground over 50 years. That could make a case optional.

The very yellow color of fresh cut OO will mellow out pretty quickly but it is a little shocking to see at first.
