I am setting up my bending form for my next guitar and am trying to figure out how/when to cut the cutaway out.
Does anyone have any photos, links, or diagrams? I saw the photos of how to actually get the florentine setup correctly here on the jigs page, but I am still not sure of how to get the block correctly cut on my form and get it dimensioned properly. Ugh...1st cutaway and my rookie-ness is oozing from every pore.
I am guessing that the florentine is easier than the venutian, right?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Hi J., check out Dave Painter's site, at the bottom of the page, there's a spot where he's been asked to build a kit from LMI, and he shows a tip that Gerald Sheppard taught him about your request or simply go to Sheppard's guitars in the shop page, you'll see his side bending machine that i'll try to build in 2006.

Good luck! and Happy New Year!

Serge

J, I don't think may people use a supporting block in the form for any type of cutaway. All 4 of my guitars to date have been cutaways and all of them florentine (that's the pointy one just to clearify).

Just lay it out on paper and bend your side to suite the layout. Than make your blocks (head block and cutaway tip block) to suite the layout. Than glue the cutaway side to the lower side (just like Bruce Dicky's jig) but I do both pieces in the caul at the same time, makes it funner (is that a word). Than glue the sides to the tail block and head block in the form, there you have it.

Here are some pics of the bending form I made, similar to that on James Olson's site, only uglier, yet it works well for me.

Here is the finished (well bound anyway) cutaway. Just need to go slow with the mitring.
