Don's very pretty Tasmanian Blackwood guitar reminded me of my current reading. I'm in Exodus, where all the furniture of the tabernacle is being detailed, and as you know, all the wooden parts are built of acacia. (I wonder if the luthiers in the group drooled over this?)
The question is if anyone has an idea just which specie would be available to a bunch of wandering Israelites out in the middle of the Arabian peninsula?

My guess would be the Egyptian Thorn Acacia Acacia-Arabica or Acacia-nilotica. It grows all over the Middle East. It is the most likely candidate for the Crown of Thorns as well. They are not very big trees though 30' Max. That or the umbrella acacia but it is mainly in Central Africa.

Thanks, Michael--I did some Googling and found another couple of names, both claimed to be THE tree. Acacia Farnesiana, or the [bad word]tah tree (country of origin = Egypt), and Acacia Senegal. But who knows? Well, Moses did, but he's not telling. Stan is probably right--they used the good stuff. Then covered it in gold! What a lesson is there.

Ok, the censor can't handle a perfectly good name. And a couple other Biblical names come to mind that it couldn't handle either. Oh well....

[bad word]tim wood - acacias, also called "Abel-[bad word]tim" (Num. 33:49), a plain or valley in the land of Moab where
the Israelites were encamped after their two victories over Sihon and Og, at the close of their
desert wanderings, and from which Joshua sent forth two spies (q.v.) "secretly" to "view" the
land and Jericho (Josh. 2:1).
