I got mine from WW Graingers-from what I rememeber the fan and motor cost around $500.

There are two flavours of these, totally enclosed and explosion proof. Both are spark proof in that all the running parts of the motor and enclosed and away from the air flow. I spent big bux to get the explosion proof but in retrospect that is probably overkill for most luthiers. The explosion proof means they have been tested and if the armature comes apart or similar other disaster, the body of the motor will contain it all. The odds of this happening with other than continuous use in a body shop are pretty minimal. So a regular totally enclosed is probably good enough.

Also, you want to get a fan/impeller that is spark proof, usually made of aluminum. As suggested, check Grainger's for new ones and check your local electric motor shop for used. Some good deals can be had, but expect to pay around $us200+++, "reasonable" they ain't.

Another option if you have the room is to have a spark proof fan-only that is belt driven. The motor sits outside the air flow. This has to be anti-static mounted with something that grounds the belt to remove static buildup. This is a cheap way to get a big fan run by a cheap 1/4hp motor. The big "wall-of-filters" type things in a body shop are often of this type of build.

Could you please explain the part about "anti-static mounted with something that grounds the belt..." part. I understand the reason/why I just need clarification on the how. I too need a Fan and the belt drive solution seems to be the best for me. any help would be greatly appreciated!

A guy two houses down from me built an airplane in his garage/backyard/livingroom. When it came time to paint (Emron)he built a spay booth with plastic sheeting, sealed it and used roof top type evaporative cooler(on the ground)as an exhaust fan. All the fumes were pulled through the wet pads. Pretty Slick I thought. Kept the neighbors from complaining anyway.

Explosion proof/resistant?? I don't know. What do you think. I'm contemplating spaying a volkswagen and plan to do something similar. For guitars, I use water based stuff.

I was looking at exhaust fans from grainger for the last 6 months. I don't think they sell to individuals,I may be wrong. If anyone knows for sure let me know please.I guess I could call them just haven't gotten around to it.

No Shane, that fan wouldn't be explosion proof. The one I saw was Item
#7578706421 (sorry, I'm new to this forum and not sure how to
hyperlink).

And Tim, I believe Grainger's official policy is sale to businesses and
institutions only, but that rule is taken fairly lightly. Basically if you have a
business card that's good enough for them.

I had to supply a tax # on my letter head, and even then I never got a catalog...

Perhaps they are more difficult to deal through the mail than in person.
I'm fortunate enough to have a warehouse in town, and when I've bought
from them in person they never asked for my tax #.
