If I spent $1160 on wood, I'd better be able to build something out of it that I could live in, 'cause I doubt I'd be living here much longer.

$1160 spread over a few purchases.... well I might be able to get away with that.
Paul,

I'll keep a Blackwood side/back set to one side for you. I dont think i'll get to use all 5 sets Ive ordered before I die anyway. Pop down to Adelaide at some stage and pick the set up.

Cheers Martin

Okay Guys

Here is the low down on Australian Tonewoods. My Tim Spittle and I teach what you call Tech Studies or “Shop”. The “guitar thing” has been alive and well for several years and I hope to chipping and shaping tonewoods for long time.

My primary aim is to make available a range of Australian tonewoods that are seldom seen on the open market. I figured that the forum is probably the best place to offer these quality sets etc. Like most of you, when I got the bug to make guitars I couldn’t find a source. I think I went through a truck load of paper, many hours on the computer and long distance calls trying to work out how, what when and where. Through a bit of luck and careful planning I am now in a position to offer small volumes of high quality material. I know all you guys are as mad about tonewood as I am, so any new source is welcome. I am about 8 guitars down the luthery road.
I am here for the long term and hope that my pricing is reasonable. Any tonewood damaged in transit or evidence of defects will be replaced. I ship anywhere in the world but add that I have had some bad experiences with surface mail goods being damaged or lost. Economy Air Mail and Global Mail seem to be the most efficient ways to send goods.

All the prices are in US Dollars. My apologies for any confusion.

The contact page is working now. There is however an email link at the bottom of each page. I am grateful for your forbearance.

Regarding the availability of sets, there will be about 20 to 30 sets of medium to high figure in stock per month. Master grade material when available will be released on a limited basis so every one can have access. I have in stock flitches that will be resawn each month. There will be a lead in time for some sets after they are resawn. While the flitches have been sawn several years ago the material will still need to be stickered for a couple of months in my humidity controlled room.

I am interested in offering some Sheoak, Myrtle and Jarrah for peer appraisal as part of a guitar build. If you are interested let me know.

Hi Tim,

Glad to know you're out there making this gorgeous wood available. All of the guitars I'm building and planning to build have necks that match the backs and sides, so I'm especially glad to see you're cutting stock for necks as well.

I'm pretty well stocked at the moment, but will, no doubt, be ordering some master grade wood from you at some point. I look forward to it.

As someone who happens to LOVE Tas Blackwood, I'm glad to see another supplier out there besides the folks on the west coast. Glad to have you folks here!

I personally have bunches of Taz Blackwood, and also have some other woods, like Taz Myrtle and Flamed Taz Tiger Myrtle which are gorgeous. There's nothing as strikingly beautiful as the Flamed Taz Tiger Myrtle under finish...Wow!!! I could be very happy building with nothing but Blackwood. Well, and some BRW every now and then would be nice too.
Nice to see someone making those gorgeous woods available to us over here!

I too will be looking for Tas Blackwood neck material. It makes a striking neck.

Will you folks have any one-piece blanks available? Don Williams38783.63875

Hi Tim,

Welcome to the OLF, it's great to finally have you on board offering you wonderful stock to the membership.

Folks, just as an endorsement to our newest sponsor. Having had the pleasure of dealing directly with Tim Spittle of "Australian Tonewoods" for some time now, I can assure you all that the quality of his products and his attention to customer service is truly remarkable.

As a fellow builder, Tim has an excellent understanding of tonewoods and is very skilled at the saw. Therefore, you can be confident of only ever receiving material which is well suited to our chosen craft.

As you will have already witnessed, if you took the time to visit his website, Tim has some stunning timbers available, but as is usually the way, the images simply cannot do this stuff justice. I have been fortunate enough to see, touch and tap this tonewood first hand, in a word "superb" and the size of the sets are very generous.

Shane, Rod and Serge, you guys were wondering what we could call Tim prior to his intro, I think "OZ Tonewoods" would be appropriate, the OZ of course standing for "Outstanding Zoot"

Anyhow, I feel because of his honesty and integrity, Tim is going to be right at home here among the rest of our great sponsors and in a very short time, will prove to be a great asset to this group.

Once again welcome Tim and thank you for offering this group the opportunity to acquire some of the worlds most truly unique tonewoods, well done

And folks, hows this for a major lutherical bonus, Tim only lives about 45 minutes drive from here so, tee hee hee, no shipping cost for meeeeee

Cheers

Kim

Man, I drive that far to work every day...you're lucky! All that zoot so close to home. I'd be in some major debt...

I liked that, Serge. I liked your fork "N" knife, too.

Ron

Welcome to all the folks on the bottom half of the world, where the trees grow upside down. You'd think there would be a lot less stress on the wood.

Thanks Ron and to add to what you just said, in the bottom half of the world, when they flush the toilet, the water turns in the other direction, that could put a lot of stress on north american toilet paper!

Thanks Martin, I'll be there in the morning

Actually, thinking of taking my wife down to the Barossa or Clare Vally for our 15th aniversary which is coming up next year (we stayed at a big ol mansion there just after we first met). We might catch up then, though I won't hold you to your kind offer.

Tomorrow would be good Paul...I need someone to help be glue in some bindings on the classical....its one part of building a guitar where an octopus would come in handy!

It sounds like we share a love of the Barossa...and undoubtedly big bold Barossa Reds as well. Keep me posted on your movements and certainly drop into the workshop when your over.

Cheers Martin

Hi Jimsom,

Its botanical name is eucalyptus marginata. It was one of the main building timbers in the south west of Western Australia. The material I have comes from a place called Denmark on the south coast. It has a very wide range of colour and figure, strong rich tone, produces a very good finish and will bend well with a fox bender. Some of the Jarrah has "short grain" so care must be taken in the material used for sides.

regards

Tim

Regarding resawing for sets is there any demand for a percentage of sapwood. Flitches have usually been cut with the sap removed. If I know what you guys prefer I can make sure it meets your requirements.

regards

Tim

Personaly I love sapwood, usualy about 1" or so on the sides and a good 2" strip down the middle is nice too. This is just my preferance, what i like to see.
