I posted low quality pics of this set a while back, here are better quality pics
(I hope…) and close-ups. It was sold to me as "Goldwood", which means
nothing really… It's pretty light, stiff and close-grained, about the density
and tap-tone of Honduran mahogany. Anybody has an idea what this wood
could be? I assume it comes from central or south America and found
nothing ressembling it on the web.

Could be primavera or myrtle. That's my guess, but only a guess.

There seems like a lot of knots and imperfections in it...hope you didn't pay too much.
There was a guy on eBay selling goldwood, and I believe I asked him what it was at the time, but can't remember. I'll check and see if I still have the reply email.

update:

Apparently I deleted the email.
Did a search on Goldwood...nothing that I can find, except a speaker manufacturer and a furniture company.

Obviously, this doesn't exist as a species, but must be a local name for something else or a made-up name to sell the wood on eBay. I can't imagine anyone ever inventing a name for wood, but I guess it could happen.

Now I have to go order some Kermodie Spruce.

The guy on Ebay sells "African Goldwood", which is Mansonia altissima and yes, he did make the name up.

The set was very cheap and I was intrigued, the pics are not great but the
wood looks stunning… Yes there are some tiny knots, nothing a bit of CA
won't cure. The guy who sold it to me has no idea what it is. The term
goldwood is like "ironwood", can be a lot of different species depending
on the geography… Don, what's kermodie spruce?

Could be that. Scott, what's the name of the eBay vendor you mention?

That was a joke...it is also an invented name for a spruce hybrid that someone uses to market the wood. As I understand it, it might be a cross between sitka and englemann or white spruce. I can't remember. But the guy actually went through the trouble of legally registering the name.

Don, I think I know what you're talking about, another questionable
presence on eBay, I think?
Scott, thanks for the link, hard to tell from the pic the guy put on his
auction. If it's the same species as mine, the fingerboard would wear pretty
fast…
Hey Bob, what's on the pic? Looks stunning.

Are you going to resaw it for sets, or is it too small and destined to become
fboards and bridges?
