Some pics of my hideaway. Notes:

1. The workshop is a 6m x 3m area attached to a 6 x 9m garage.
2. All machinery and other "dirty" tasks happen in the garage.
3. Most construction work is done either on the island jutting off the main work bench. It can be unbolted from the main bench and stowed if necessary.
4. I use the spanish method with workboard in a vice on the island or clamped in the parrot vice on the main workbench for brace shaping and other work that can be done at chest level.
5. Workshop is climate controlled with dehumidifier, heating and air conditioner. And theres a big beefy fan to keep the sweat down while Im scraping rosewood backs.

Cheers Martin

I have a very small space and have managed to fit a number of very large
machines in such a way as to give me a decent amount of working space
at each machine. I have one closet with cheap plastic shelving that
houses most of my hand tools, jigs, and templates.

There have been many times when I wish I had enough space for another
workbench -which by the way is a luan door set atop cinder blocks - it is
a cheap way to get a very flat and sturdy worksurface.

Best of luck organizing your shop.

One day though maybe i'll have my own shop!!

All these great workshops and not one beer fridge
I know they don't teach this in Australia, but "beer fridge" + "power tools" = "end of woodworking career"!
In that case you'd better not look too close to the pics of my workshop...you'll notice that most of the storage boxes are wine cartons.

I generally dont man the power tools with a glass of Cab Sav in my hand but when working down braces and other less dangerous jobs I have been known to have a glass of red nearby to keep the dust down.

Joe, you must not have a wife?

Out of curiosity, where do you do your sanding and finishing?

Thanks Simon, icould not see the picture from the link, maybe because your sit is in construction, but i'd like to see it when the site is ready.

Joe, you gotta have a real great room mate and i'm curious about this: are you in anyway related to Hesh? The positive side of a small space must be that you can't afford not to be organized, you have my admiration for being so dedicated to this passion of ours and doing a great job under the circumstances! That soundbox looks very nice!

Keep up the good work Joe! Thanks

Serge

That's funny! Sun light in Norway! Huhn!
Watch it, Billy T (hey, it's the infamous Billy Dean, look out people), haven't you heard of "The Land of the Midnight Sun"?! Actually, we got plenty of sunlight, but only for a few months..."Daylight" implies that I work here during the day time, which I don't. The nice thing about daylight in these parts is that when we have it, we also have it at night, which is when I DO work here.

Well guys, no wife so anyone who is willing to marry me in the furture (I'm still young there is time) will know full well what they're getting into! :) All sanding and messy tasks are done through the door to the right outside on the deck. So you might say i'm a fair weather builder :-D . Serge the sound box on the table is my first (StewMac rosewood dred kit) it looks great from 3ft away get a little closer and the defects show up hehe. Its currently waiting for the epoxy to be sanded. My plan is to try and finish it with KTM brushed on due to the obvious limitations of the work enviorment.. but i get by and i'm hopelessly addicted :) (already have materials for a few more.) the plans for number two (my first full build) are hanging on the wall there so I can stare at them.

Serge,
For whatever reason, my website has incompatibility with older versions
of Internet explorer. This results in having to scroll down to the very
bottom of the page before you see any pictures. It might be possible this
is what was happening to you - as the link is active at the moment.

Best of luck, friend,
Simon

Paul, i agree that a good planning must make life a whole lot easier, how long did you plan for what appears to be a master shop, looks like you'll be free to move freely around that centered workbench also. I hope you'll be able to post pics of the shop when all done with major changes! Gives me a lot of good ideas too
A lot more time than I care to think about, the hardest part was where to locate the dust collector and air compressor, I talked to a number of local places that build sheds getting costs and options, nothing really met my needs. So back to the drawing board, so after laying out everything on paper we finally decided that moving the cooler is really the best option for us. Once that was settled and we knew where the new extenstion would be the rest kind of fell into place.

There is still a ton of work to be done, I'm currently planning out the storage options and starting on a bill of materials, this will effect my lighting placement which effects the dust collection layout

Good luck with your shop!!!

Thank you very much Paul and everyone here, your shops pics have demonstrated a lot of great tips for me to use, i forgot my digital camera in the shop but will be showing some pics of the so far improvements i have made over the last week end, sometime tonight. There is still a ton of work to do but i'll see the end of the tunnel soon, i'm already able to walk around more freely, thanks to you all!

PS, The update will be shown in the "shop layout 2" thread

Regards

Serge
