Yesterday evening my wife and I attended the showing of a man from our church that pass away
last Sunday. . He was 90 and a pastor of our very church decades ago. I always though he looked like a thin Colonel Sander's complete with the bowtie. His son who is in his mid 50's plays keys in our choir

Anyways, at his showing yesterday there was a slideshow on a TV showing frames of his life, he was in the service in WWII, married, children, pastor, just a very accomplished and distinguished man. In one of the photos, (early 1940's) He is holding a Martin Dread. Not 30 seconds later his son walks over to me and says "That's the guitar I was telling you about" As it turns out, it has been sitting in his home, stringless for about 20 years. He asked if Id take a look at it, maybe string it up, see if it needs anything. I said you bet!

So, this guitar will be paying me a visit soon, I plan to spend some serious time with it, caliper in hand :0)

Lance, you lucky duck! I used to go into Jon Lundberg's in Berkeley awhile back, and look at Martin dreads from that era. Some of them spoke even when not being played. If only I'd bought one. Keep us posted!

Hesh,

Yup. Reminded me of the fast car gurus during my hotrodding days. "hey I heard so-and-so bought one of Lundberg's Martins." One day in his shop I managed to take measurements of a 50s D-28 he'd shaved. Measuring through the soundhole was quite an exercise! I suppose I could post them, if I can find them, if anybody's interested.

Very sorry to hear about your old pastor...my condolences...

As to the guitar:
I think everyone here would greatly benefit from a series of photos before, during, and after repairs, as well as the dimensioned drawings of this old instrument.
Please don't be afraid to consult with Bryan Galloup on this one, since it could very well be a valuable old instrument and he understands the restoration protocols as well as anyone. This could be an opportunity of a lifetime for you, get all you can from it.
And let the rest of us benefit from your hard work.

actually,there is now quite a movement here in Israel, of not too strict believers, who are letting musical instruments into the synagogs and allow for a free atmosphere.

Heres the deal, I aint gonna touch this guitar with anything more than a ruler and a set of calipers.

Im going to string it up, tune it up, but if it requires any surgery, or repairs in any way, im headed to Bryans or Davids with it.

Any thing I gleen from pawing it inside and out will be fully shared here

Yes, and don't forget, any decent autopsy includes weighing the organs, er...I mean parts as you disassemble it.
