I have been thinking about getting a new vacuum pump. Does anyone have any thoughts on this? Too loud? Too big? Etc.?

My plan is I hope to have something big enough to drive 2 dished glue ups at the same time.

it will do two brace dish glue-ups simultaneously with no trouble and run a bridge clamp and a work holder as well if you have a good sized reservoir. as for being too big, extra capacity just means it will cycle on for shorter periods.

Looks very good. 28"Hg is perfect. Just make sure that all your connections are very tightly sealed with no leaks anywhere, or at least as few as possible.
You can get parts to make a manifold inexpensively from McMaster Carr...including a vac guage and an on/off valve.

5.5 cfm is good for this application. You need to get the air out of the second dish before the first one leaks its vacuum. I say go for it.

That was fast, got it today.

Okay, this is a fairly big guy, but it really isn't loud at all. It sits on 4 antivibration feet, but it'll probably walk if left on awhile. Instructions are included on how to mount the thing a bit more permanently, if you want.

Now, it does not come with a electrical cord. Instead, it has 4 wire coming out of the motor, 2 which connect to an external capacitor that is also provided, and 2 which connect to the mains. So you need to get a project box and do a bit of wiring. I've attached a photo showing what I did. I plan to add a switch to it - right now you turn it on and off by plugging it in and out, which isn't too cool. However, my outlet has a switch so it works for me for the moment.

It doesn't come with plumbing, gauges, etc. I bought the builders kit. The total price is still less than comparable 5CFM commercial units out there, so I feel I did good. I haven't used it yet, though, but it sure does seem to pump better than my current 1CFM pump.

I'm sure nobody remembers, but I posted awhile ago about my leaky vacuum frame for brace clamping. I could never pull more than a few Hg even using clamps to clamp the frame to the carrier board, and I could easily peel the frame away from the carrier board by hand. With this new system I pull a full vacuum in just a few seconds and the thing is welded together.
