I have the Porter Cable 7334 as well but I have yet to use it in guitar building, although its ben a workhorse for other applications. That coupled with the fact that it couples to my shopvac hose perfectly is great.
cheers

Michael, thanks for that! I'll start looking into it again...Charlie Hoffman mentioned Dynabrade on his site, and I've been wishing for one ever since!

Question for Festool owners: am I seeing it right that you can only use Festool-brand paper if you want the dust collection to work properly, or perhaps at all?

I believe that I looked into this a month or so back and Klingspor has paper with the proper holes in it. I have also heard of a few guys who buy paper with the outer holes and punch their own in the center. The festol paper is not too expensive, and it does seem to last supposably due to the dust collection. But check Klingspor, they do have the paper.

Sorry Pete I lost track on this post

I use Micromesh on my ROS both wet and dry for 2500-12000 to do final stages of finish leveling polishing before going to the buffer. As compared to paper I would say it last about 5 times as long wet and twice as long dry as long as you don't allow the heat to build up or let it clog Micromesh claims 15 time the life but I doubt that.

PS
I use pneumatic ROS for wet

Thanks for all the input, discussion, and opinions regarding my question about ROS's. I wound up getting a RIDGID R2600, lightly used, off eBay, for $20 + shipping, $32 total, no case, but did include the manual/warranty card, and backer pads for both PSA & H&L. Looks like it was used maybe once or twice........a good deal.
Today, I received a 3 pack set of Microplane stainless steel sanding disks, H&L to use with the R2600. They claim that these sand 9X faster, and last 10X longer than regular disks.

Is MicroMesh available in disks for ROS's? And if so, are they PSA or H&L, and where available? The only thing available locally seems to be 80, 120, & 200, are there sources for other options?

I've found a source for PSA & H&L backing pads at about $11 each, and am thinking about ordering a couple of each. The idea being to switch pads rather than switch disks. And if those Microplane disks are really 10X this might pay for itself, and be cost effective.

Sorry for so many questions, and rambling on; I'm totally new at woodworking, and these tools.

Thanks, great forum!

Thanks for the answer, Michael! And thanks for posting it in a way that brought my attention back to it.

Regarding wet sanding, since I only have an electric Festool, I suppose I should probably stand water so I'm at the same potential as the tool which is wet from the sanding, right?

Haha

The Festool disks are not expensive. You really have to use ones with proper hole placement so you can use the dust collector. Otherwise it is easy to overheat them and melt the hooks on the pads.
