Ron, Ronn, John, and Don, you got it, a binding or purfling ledge cutting tool, the luthier had a machinist make for him. Tub-o-lard all around boys!
So who was the luthier?

Bruce, who's is it? I knew a guy in Sacramento that had one built but I haven't ever seen it.

What ever it realy is (Bruce and others have let the cat out of the bag, binding cutter) It's more fun making it up.    I've had some good laughs this morning.

I built this several years ago and, yes, it's for the binding and purflin rabbets. The cutter is an off-the-shelf 3-wing slot cutter. I have a set of rub collars for my standard binding and a set for the purflin. The cutter is just under 2" diameter which seems to minimize any tendency for tearout.
The guitar body mounts on a turntable and the router mounts in the end of an articulated arm.

I use the #308 cutter.   I find MLCS to be an excellent supplier of router bits with no shipping charge.

P.S.   Glad you see you guys having so much fun with this.

Here's a "less large" shot of it in action. I replaced the UHMW pilots with aluminum later on.

Nice Nelson. I can sure see where a 2" blade would provide a better cut. What do you have it attached too?

Don--I made an arbor to fit the 1/2" router collet. The arbor has diameters machined to fit the bearings as well as the cutter hole and threaded on the end for the 5/16" nut.
Bruce--The left side of my brain is machinist. The right side is luthier wannabee.

Nelson, being an old school teacher, and having seen your work, I believe your brain is ambidextrious.

Oh, and you are one of those rare people that can be anything they wannabe! And if you aren't already a luthier, there is NO hope for the rest of us.

Thanks for sharing this cooltool from your hand/mind and MCLS.
