For those non-americans on the forum, Memorial Day is a holiday in the US, meant to commemorate all of the US military that have served in defense of the country and in all of the conflicts we have been involved in.

While Veterans organizations and some towns celabrate Memorial Day for its original purpose for meny has become a time for cookouts, going to the beach or sales at the shopping mall. In the US, it is also seen as a start of the summer season as it is around the time that Universities and other schools are ending their regular school year.

It is always observed on a Monday so that it also makes the last 3 day weekend before July 4, US Independence day.

Being a Norwegian-American my family celebrate Independence day on May 17th, the date that Norway gained its independence. In Norway most of the country dress in the folk dress of their town or region and will participate in a parade in which people walk past the King and Queen. It is a day of great national pride.

From our Forefathers to our sons and brothers (the female gender included), life as we know it could not have become a possibility without the determination and sacrfice of these brave and courageous people.
Though we may find fault with many details and situations that we are faced with, it is they who give us the opportunity to live our lives as we see fit.
Past, Present and Future, let`s give them the recognition and the prayers they so righteously deserve!
SALUTE!

It's more than just remembering our veterans...as Shawn said, it's remembering the ultimate sacrifice that many gave in conflicts like WWI, WWII, The Korean War, The Vietnam Conflict, and many more. Those sacrifices, as often as not, were in defense of other nations against forces that would try to oppress them. These men and women gave their lives, or risked their lives to protect the freedom of others besides those in the USA.

Remember them well! Our lives would be radically different had it not been for them.

The reverence, when driving past Westwood military cemetary, and seeing only a portion of the price of liberty, gives one great gratitude, and humility, in being also called American.

May God bless our veterans, present, and eternal.

I forgot to post yesterday but I do want to express my Sincere Thanks to all those who have served and given a part of themselves to our great country.

The Bible says "greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends" John 15:13

Can you think of a greater sacrifice?

My thanks to them all.

Especially to my great uncle Al who died two weeks before the end of WWII.

And to my friends who went to Viet Nam and came back in a box.
