Well you would certainly have felt really small. It must have been incredible to have been living among these.

You can hike into the Olympic Mountains, and I'm sure other places that these big trees were logged, and find the stumps to these giants. Often the stumps stand higher than my head to get past the wide bottoms and have the notches for the spring boards still visible.

Yes, protected. Most is deep in in the national park. All the easily accessible stuff was chopped up a long time ago.
