How can I tell if my nut/saddle is bone or synthetic? I've read ALOT about replacing synthetic nut/saddle with bone. Is there a way to test for bone?
Thanks,
Chris Nielsen

Sand it and smell it. Bone stinks!

Bite it, if it leaves tooth marks it's synthetic.

Kids...

The way to tell any synthetic material from a natural material is to touch it with a hot pin, and take a whiff. Bone, Tortois shell, pearl, ivory, etc.., all smell of burnt protein, which smlles like burnt hair or fingernails(protein).

Synthetic materials will smell of solvents.

Careful touching a hot pin to anything you think may be celluloid, as it is flammable. Big time. The pin doesn't need to be glowing red. Just heat the point of it with a match for a second and touch it to the piece in question.
