Howdy guys and gals-


"The Don" made me an offer I couldn't refuse. It was one of the cocobolo and red spruce combo sets on his swap meet page. The sides are freshly cut and haven't had the chance to oxidize to their true orange/red color. Check this out - it's so pretty!










I am going to use this wood for a very non-traditional Advanced Jumbo copy. I'm not sure what the old-time music/bluegrass pickers are going to think, but it's to my liking. Thanks again Don!

    Real Nice! I've never worked with Cocobolo does it oxidize under-finish like cherry? Cause I'm like'n that color a lot! Probably?

I have a cocobolo dred hanging in the shop that I still haven't gotten around to making a neck for. When I finished it it was a nice bright orange color like the one above. Now, a year or so later, it looks like BRW or something at first glance.

Gotta get a neck built for that thing....

Hey Billy Dean-

On the back side of one of the side pieces it is a very dark red color - it was the outside of the board being resawn. I'm not sure how long that outside face has been oxidizing but it is a pretty color. I'll try to get a shot of it this evening so Hesh and Bill Greene have an idea of the final color of this cocobolo.

Thanks John! Glad you like it. I have a guitar in progress with a sister-set of that back on my website. It won't darken a whole ton, but will darken. This cocobolo is from Nicaragua, which tends to be lighter than the stuff from Mexico from what I've seen. That sure is a pretty hunk o' wood.
Fortunately, I still have two more sets of that hidden away for "someday" builds.

Hesh and Bill Greene-

Here is a picture of what the sides will eventually look like. The right hand piece is freshly resawn - it is yellow and orange. On the left piece - the red section wasn't sanded recently - maybe more than a year ago. The left side of the left piece was sanded more than a month ago and has started to oxidize back to orange and eventually red again. The colors in my picture are a bit off - everything that is darker yellow is actually orange.

What do you guys have planned for this wood? Are you going to use the Adi tops and cocobolo together or on separate builds?

Like Hesh, I have a few back/side sets in line for upcoming builds, which will give this coco plenty of time to aclimatize. I've seen one of the sister sets to this wood at Don's house, on an SJ he has in progress, and it's beautiful. That guitar is (or was) available at one point. I probably should have bought it. :-)

So, barring some change of heart, this coco is destined for an SJ, perhaps with a cutaway if my skill level gets up to it. And, no, the adi will probably not make it to the SJ...like Hesh, that will be for a dread.

WOW, that's a very nice set John, lookin' forward to the finished guitar with this awesome wood!

Bill and Hesh-

I like the ideas for your guitars, they sound great. Both of you have plans for cutaways in yours. I haven't given much thought to them as I play Spanish guitars and I'm just not used to cutaways. I guess if I ever start building for anyone besides myself I'll have to learn to build with cutaways.
