Call me stupid but I bought a couple cans poly from home depot to try on a body. Was out of clear and didnt feel like hooking up the compressor and all. Started wondering how this stuff would work. Seemed to go on ok and looks fine.   Anybody try this approach before???

Among the tons of finishes I've tried, Varathane brand polyurethane was one that worked reasonably well,(except on exotic woods; there it would need a sealer). Sands and buffs to a great gloss. One day, I spotted a spray can of the stuff, and took it home to try; it also performed well, in the end, but they thinned it so much that it took forever to get a decent 'build', and if you aren't patient enough between coats, it would then take forever and a day to cure.

Strangely, it wore rather quickly as a neck finish.... I'd have epected it to be hard-wearing, since we use this same stuff on hardwood floors a lot around these parts. Perhaps the formula is completely different in the spray bombs...

That wouldn't surprise me one bit. I've found that to be the case with a lot of other finishes. Yet the label leads you to believe that it's the same product, but now it's in a convenitent can.

Hi Rich,

How are you??
Say....Urethane was used on my first three guitars. It's a good finish but requires a longer set up time than other products.
I useed Helman's made by MINWAX.
Apply thin coats and let them dry for a longer period between coats.
