Here are the items I will offer. I will limit this to things that are difficult to find elsewhere and are surplus to my needs. I will put things in 3 separate posts: White spruce tops, Back and side sets, and Misc.(just a few fingerboards and such).

I will be kinda busy this weekend with house guests, but will do my best to keep up here with answers to questions and such, and keep things updated.

Payment will be by PayPal to: ggoltz (at) aol (dot) com

You may pay for your items first, if you want, and then I will have a shipping address and can figure shipping for you to pay separately or you can PM me a shipping address and I will figure one total including shipping, your choice. I will not be able to start shipping before Tuesday and want to have everything out of here by the end of the week. I will use UPS shipping where possible, so an actual street address is needed. Any shipments outside the lower 48 states will be by USPS.

OK, White Spruce tops in this post. The first 4 are 10+ year air dried tops from my older wood. The last 7 are 4 year air dried and all came from one tree. For those not familiar with white spruce, it is an eastern spruce similar to red spruce, but typically has a bit lower density and is a bit softer. As with red spruce, grain spacing is a bit irregular, so it can’t really be graded comparably with other spruces. I process this wood myself and hand split the logs to minimize runout. Since logs over 24” diameter are rare, there is much more waste (bracewood) from a log than tops.

All of these have a dread outline drawn on for scale. All are well quartersawn.

10 year air dried

WS 5B-1 $60 SOLD

Image
WS 1-01 $65 SOLD

Image
WS 3-01 $65 (note pitch pockets which will be in soundhole)

Image
WS 2-01 $50 (small pitch pockets at upper end)

4 year air dried

Image
WS B1-1 $55

Image
WS B1-2 $55

Image
WS B1-3 $55

Image
WS A2-1 $55 SOLD

Image
WS B2-1 $50

Image
WS B3-1 $55

WS B3-2 $55

Thanks for looking :D

Back and Side sets

I will start with a few Cambodian Beng sets. This wood is difficult to find. Similar in density to Brazilian rosewood. Very stabile, easy to bend, and excellent workability. All of this wood is 20+ years air dried. I have built with it, and am very pleased with the results. The first 2 sets are sister sets to the one Colin Symonds built with. The remainder are a variety. This wood all cost me the same, so I will price all sets the same, $88.

Image
CB-01 $88
Backs 6 -8” wide x 21 ¾, sides 5 x 36

Image
CB-02 $88 SOLD
Same size as above set

Image
CB-03 $88 SOLD
Backs 8 5/8 x 21 ¾”, sides 4 7/8 x 34”, cracks far outside of pattern

Image
CB-04 $88
Backs 8 ¾ x 21 ¾”, sides 5 x 34”

Image
CB-05 $88
Backs 9 x 22”, sides 5 x 34”

Image
CB-06 $88
Backs 9 x 22”, sides 5 x 33 ½”

Image
CB-07 $88
Backs 9 x 22”, sides 5 x 34”

Image
CB-08 $88 SOLD
Backs 8 ½ x 21 ½”, sides 5 x 34”

Next a couple of high grade cocobolo rosewood sets

Image
Coco104-A-1 $206
Backs 8 ¾ x 22”, sides 5 x 33”. This is a very colorful perfectly quartersawn set with a center sapwood blaze. The sides appear to be from another billet from the same log as the backs. Air dried since 2004

Image
Coco2004-4 $258 SOLD
Backs 8 ¾ x 23 ½, sides 5 x 36”. Cut from a mostly air dried log that I purchased in 2004. Absolutely amazing figure and color. The sides WILL match the back in color under finish. I know because I have built with this wood. This is from my best coco and I am offering this set from my personal stash (saving some for myself)

Now, for the luthier who has everything. Snakewood in sizes wide enough to squeeze out a full sized 2-piece backed set from is almost non-existent. I will share this jumbo sized one from my private stash.

Image
Snakewood-1 $1,500
This exceptional set has backs and sides cut from the same log. Backs are 9” wide by 23” and sides are 5 – 4 1/2 “ wide by 34”. Air dried wood, I am not sure how long, I have had it for 5 years. I have never seen a snakewood set this size anywhere, and I have looked a lot.

Just a note on bending snakewood. First of all, this wood feels more like metal or glass than wood. It is very hard and dense. I suggest thinning the back to no more than .085-.090". Do not attempt to bend the sides thicker than .080", .075 on a tight cutaway. This wood is very strong, so thinness is not a problem. I have tried bending the sides dry, but it is difficult and there is springback. Solution - soak sides in hot water for 1 hour prior to bending. Bend at 325 degrees. Bends very easily, stays flat across the grain, and no springback. I even took a dry side that I had bent as a regular side, soaked it to straighten it, and then bent it as a cutaway - worked perfectly.

Thanks for looking :D

Fingerboards

Just a few odds and ends

Image
Oversized quartersawn ebony boards, 5/16” thick, Sizes as indicated. Note cracks obvious on lower right corners. There are also some short repairable hairline checks in aboutthe first inch of the lower end. These are straight grained and quartersawn and should finish black.
Number 1 (left) $35, Number 2 (right) $30

Image
High figure Snakewood fingerboard $100. SOLD
This came from the same logs I cut the back and side sets from.

Image
Medium figure Snakewood fingerboard $50. This is 3/8” thick and you should be able to squeeze out a bridge blank. Also, the offcuts make excellent nuts and saddles.

That’s about it, unless you beg for more ;)

Thanks for looking :D

Well here are a few more.

Since all of the straight grained Cambodian Beng sets are sold, I am adding 2 more. These sets are identical.

Image
CB-09 $88 SOLD
Backs 8 ½ x 21 ½”, sides 4 7/8” x 34”

Image
CB-10 $88 SOLD
Backs 8 ½ x 21 ½”, sides 4 7/8 x 34”

And here are a couple of Goncalo Alves sets. Goncalo alves is a dense, rosewood-like wood from Central America. It is fine grained, easy to work and bends well. These sets are from perfectly quartersawn wood that has air dried over 5 years. Another supplier has offered this wood and referred to it as being similar to mahogany. Either they have a different wood, or they made an error. This wood in no way resembles mahogany. Under a finish, this wood shows a light shimmering curl. With exposure to light, this wood darkens considerably. The lighter reddish colors become a rich deep brick red and the darker streaks become black.

This is one of my favorite woods to build from and I have completed several guitars from it.

Image
Goncalo Alves-01 $112 SOLD
Backs 8 ¾ x 22”, sides 4 7/8 x 34”

Image
Goncalo Alves-02 $112
Backs 8 ¾ x 22”, sides 5 x 35”

Thanks for looking,

There are still things left in the first three posts :D

Grant

Grant: I have quite a bit of wood and am planning on moving this summer. If not I would be all over those new additions of Beng. Very very nice sets. They won't last long.

Grant,
Since this is a "swap"-a-palooza, I am interested to see if you would like to swap some tonewood. I have a nice set of zebrawood (a sister set to the one pictured here):

I am interested in CB-07. Would you be up for a swap? If you aren't interested in zebrawood, is there anything you would be willing to swap for?

You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post.

Nice zebra. Unfortunately, I have a pile of sets and about a dozen uncut 10 foot long boards - more than I will ever be able to use

But I am not adverse to swapping, what else you got? I will forwarn you that it Will have to be something off the beaten path, because I have piles of the usual.

I don't have many sets to trade but I have some wenge finger boards and some bois de rose finger boards. I also have some ovangkol, walnut, and padauk head plates and rosette blanks. I also have plenty of wedge binding. Oh, and a bocote bridge blank or two. Any of that strike your interest?
