It seems like most people here build steel, which makes sense since that is what most guitarists play, but I thought it would be interesting to run this poll.


I've built one nylon, second in the works with wood and plans for more. No plans or interest in steel as of yet.

I put steel only because that is what I sell at this time. I have built a classical and may offer one someday but not till I build two or three more. The classical market is a bit more refined and harder to find clients and with good reason they are much more demanding of the tonal characteristics of their guitars.

I say steel now, but ive taken a keen interest in electrics lately and im either going to build one my self or commission Brock Poling to do one for me

I said "only steel" but that includes mandolins. I also have fiddles on my short todo list. What the end user of the fiddles puts on is entierly up to them.

I'm in the shop today working on #2, a Honduras mohogany and sitka steel dread with a 3 piece back. Gotta go make some radius bowls now....

Well I have finally caught the building bug from all you guys so I plan on building the lightest weight telecaster I can make. I am a bass player but I got a thing for teles. My repair shop is in Manhattan and I just would not be able to have the room to buy the cool larger power tools to build acoustics.

Currently only steel string acoustic. I've always wanted to build an electric or two - semi hollow-body. After seeing Trey Anastasio's guitar built by Languedoc I'm totally sold on building something similar. It's a beauty: http://www.treyanastasio.com/treysrig/ATaylor38741.8534837963

My new love is steel-string acoustics, but I do very much love building electrics. For a while there, right after the exhiliration of my first acoustic, I was thinking 'nah, won't build many electrics, like', but I started missing it very quickly.

They're very different instruments, and while I prefer playing acoustics, I very much love building, carving, shaping electrics. The freedom that gives me. And the excuse to use pretty wild topwoods ;-)

I've always loved steel string acoustics but I play electric some, so I'll probably build a few Tele or Strats someday.

I build classicals only now, however I'd really like to try building a few steel-strings. So far the only reason I haven't started is because I really want to master building a fine classical, and I dread the learning curve as will as jigging up process to start building SS.

I started by building electric basses, then grew to build drednaughts, and auditorium style acoustic guitars.

Ha! I knew we'd get you!! As for the acoustic--you'll find a way someday!

So far, three steel flat tops, one steel archtop, and one nylon SJ with another nylon SJ in the works. I think the archtop was the most fun, but also the most $$. Would love to build an electric, but should probably learn how to play guitar first!    

I started to build because the wife would have nothing to do with me spending 8K on the classical I wanted. So my desire was/is to build great classicals.

Along the way I end up building a few steel stringed dreads.

I voted for mostly steel some nylon, although this strictly isn't true as I've never used nylon only gut so far.

I put mostly steel and some nylon. I love them both I'm always flip flopping back and forth on which I like better. My steel strings have turned out better sounding than my nylons, thats for sure.
