Hey guys - after seeing the otherthread with the beautiful planes I wasnt even sure if I should post this - those make my "nice tool purchases" look like a pile of puke - but Im happy about this so here goes>

I was out for 4 sheets 5x5 baltic birch ply today and I hit this place called - Tools and Space - they are closing down as the owner is retiring and they were offering 10-20% on hardwoods, tools, etc.
Luckily I was inthe market for some handtools, so I strolled in - I had to decide do I get semi crappy tools and get better ones later or bite the bullet and get quality.
Well I have lead fillings because I walked out of there with some very nice Lie Nielsen Planes and spokeshave.
a Lie Nielsen 5 1/2" Lg iron scraper plane, a Lie Nielsen 12deg low angle block rabbet plane, a Lie Nielsen #4 smooth, and sweet Lie Nielsen flat spokeshave.
A couple microplanes.
6 beautiful Pfiel chisels and a long bent #5 gouge, as well as some Pfiel violin knives, swiss steel is lovely!
A medium and fine arkansas stones, a veritas MkII honing guide, a dozuki back saw .3mm, 3" engineers rule, asst riffler rasps, even while getting a 20% discount - it was expensive
But wow, some very nice additions to the tool array.
Many more to go though.

I have found that I actually don't use a big variety of hand tools - I find
myself going back to a couple of them all the time.

Charlie, I have that very same Lie Nielsen spokeshave - it is a superb
piece of equipment.

Congratulations on those great tools. Buying stuff sure is fun.

why thats a Lie Nielsen 12deg low angle block rabbet plane - its an expensive little bugger, but from what I understand well worth the money. I love it that the blade comes all the way out to the edge of the sole!

For me it is acyually sad to here taht Tools and Space is closing done. They have been there long before the 25 years I have been woodworking and is one of the very few small high quality tool and wood places left. They also offered a great services in renting machine use by the hour and putting on a large number of different wood working courses.....makes me feel a little bit older......But Hey...you did great and you won't sorry...well, except for the stones, but I am just partial to water stones!!

Dammit. Now I have tool envy. And I only recently got a bunch of shiny new hand tools. I guess I'll just wait for the Knight jointer to arrive. That should assuage my tool GAS for a while....

I've had my eyes on the little Lie-Nieslon scraper plane for a long time, the original Stanley #212's are getting ridiculously expensive. The last tool list from Patric Leach had a well kept one for $1785.00, and as he said "worse examples have sold for more".    

One of most my frequently used tools is the little Pfeil chip carving knife, but I ground a much steeper angle on it so it's easier to guide the cut.
