Did you miss out on Bob's Black Limba sale earlier this week. He generously donated a VERY nice set to the OLF.

Good luck.

You guys bid the price up right out of the gate! Make it last...take your time...12 noon on friday is supposed to be the climax...there's no fun in having an auction when you can go straight to the source and buy for less! Come on guys. Starting a bid off at $50 when the stuff sells for $70 isn't too smart is it?

Can some one help me out with the tonal qualities of black limba?
Is it close to walnut?
How does it machine and finish?
Is it a stable wood or prone to cracking.
Any info wood help.

That is a very beautiful set.

Hi Steve
It is very mahogany like both in grain and tone. Very stable. It comes off the saw very flat and stays that way. Really nice wood.

OK keep those bids coming. It's for a very good cause.

For what it's worth, there ain't no mo. At least not on Bob's site at present. So unless he's hiding a large log of which we know not, this is it for a while.

Steve

PS I made that mistake a while back with some beautifully figured EIR. Bought two sets. Should've bought it all!

All I meant was it's more fun to have a bidding frenzy at the close than to see it sky rocket way before. Actually the price could wind up even higher if serious bidders were going at it in a frenzy...people tend to loose control...don't ask me how I know this...

Hey, of course I know it's for a good cause... it's for our buddies/friends/amigos/the two crazy guys who run the place...I know that...believe me no-body and I mean NO-Body, appreciates these guys, and this place more than me!

That's some beautiful wood. I'm interested to know if it's quartersawn - very hard to tell with all those wild lines on it.

I use black limba on electric bodies and necks all the time. Generally, I consider this as an "upgrade" over honduran mahogany (even though I love mahogany). It is very stable and works great.

I have not built an acoustic from it, but I have to think it would make a fine guitar.

I've processed a few thousand board feet into electric body blanks and have another thousand board feet inbound next month...getting more difficult to acquire as are most Arican woods with all the problems there.

It's my experience that weight and density varies a great deal in this species. The mild colored, lighter weights (like this set) are closer to Port Orford Cedar than Hondo mahogany. Of course, it's always a per piece evaluation and YPMMV.
