Today I recieved my fedex package of the two Stanley Bailey no 6 and no 7 planes that I won on ebay for $20.50. I found a note from fedex saying they delivered them to the back door. There is no access to the back unless you climb the 6 foot locked chain link fence. I found the package laying in the middle of the concrete yard. I open them inside and look what I found. The package was well packed with plenty of bubble wrap and foam peanuts and this still happened. The were in beatiful shape except for surface rust. I was looking forward to using these and now i'm pissed. Does antyone know if I have to file a claim or does the shipper against fedex? I have emailed her with pics and i'm waiting for a response. This is the second time fedex has done this two me. The last time there was no damage though. I will never use fedex again in my life.

That is really terrible. And to think that beautiful plane was one coka-cola bath away from a new life...

That's sad news Michael, i hope you get good royal treatment from them, this should have never happened. Some people were sleeping when wisdom passed. Sorry to hear about that!

Yes Andy that was me. I posted on acoustic guitar magazines forum. It was a old mandolin banjo. Since there is no signature confirmation. I guess they feel they can leave the package where ever. There is no way the driver can claim he set it there nice and easy. The gate is locked and the only way it could have been where it was is if its thrown. The last package was not damaged. I called last time to complain and since there was no damage I got the brush off bassicly.
Michael I am no expert by any means but I think that you file the claim. Make sure to keep all the packing materials and it would be a good idea to photograph the outside of the box if it shows and crushed areas, tears, dents etc.

I am sorry this happened to you, hang in.
Hesh since i read you post I started filling out a claim online.

Michael, i can feel you're hurt but i'm sure something even better will happen to you bud, like Bruce said to me when i went and sent my plexiglass rosette cutter jig on the cement floor of my shop, he told me to try and see it as a blessing though hard to hear at the moment, something better happened to me afterwards and i devellopped a good friendship with another OLF'er!

Right Mike?

Shipper files the claim in most cases, and then specifies who receives payment.

I think I would contact FedX, find out who was the delivery driver and turn him in to the higher authorities with the company. I have never had problems with FedX and tossing something in your backyard is just wrong. They should have left you a pick up taped to your door or just left a note or something.

Looked like some nice planes, hate this happened.

How are your brazing skills?
In my experience, the shipper has to file the claim. But I'm not sure if that is the hard and fast rule or not. I'm pretty sure that if there's a payout, the check has to me made to the shipper.
If it comes to this, please don't throw them away. I'll buy them off you and attempt to braze them.

Paul,

I was thinking the same thing. They're collectible value is ruined regardless, but they might could still be made back into good functional tools.

Best,

Michael

Terry..yes paypal was used. I 'll have to look into that. Butt I don't want to put the blame on the shipper since it wasn't her falt. Usually paypal go's after them.
Paul I have no brazing skill's but i have a freind who is an ex navy trained welder. He is very talented with metal. He might be able to do something for me. If not i'll let you know what's up. The no 7 only has the two chips on the side wall. Other then that everything else looks ok.

Hey Michael? Do you think since you had trouble with them(FedX) before and complained that maybe some driver opened the box ,broke your planes, sealed it back up,and through it in your back yard ?? I'm sure this crossed your mind. After seeing that post about the guitar being run over,I'll bet this is possible!

That could be possible.. But all it would take to do this type of damage on cast iron would be a drop over a six foot fence. The thing that gets me pissed off is the fact that they made it through nearly a hunderd years of use with no damage and all it took was some idiot FedEx driver who was in a hurry to ruin them.

Michael I'm alittle west of Philly and have a fed-ex delivery coming monday I think I'll wait on the porch and inspect the package before the driver leaves.I'm sorry to hear of your problems with fed-ex.I had a table saw delivered by freight, they put in up 2 small flights of steps onto the porch without a scratch on the box.But they probably didn't have GPS and Digital entries to make. This fast paced way of living is for the birds you see that sort of non-quality in almost every product or service these days.I hope you get your problem taking care of

A plane would have to be bodily hurled to have it break in half like that.
Hope you get some appropriate compensation out of FedEx.

I read a post somewhere yesterday of a guy who was having a $1000 camera delivered by fedex and he okayed back door delivery. The problem was they did deliver it to the back door just not his. It was a neighbor a couple doors down. The driver threw it over a fence and the neighbors 2 rottweilers had there fun playing with it all morning before the neighbor went to see what they had.. When he filed his claim they wanted the box and camera and they sent someone to pick it up. Of course the driver who came to get it again went to the wrong house. He lost his claim becaue when you okay backdoor deliveries they state they will not be rsponsible for loss or damage. I looked this up on their site and this is their policy. So whatever any of you do don't allow this. I never okayed backdoor delivery. I'm waiting to see what their response will be.

I found this on the web on a forum. This might explain why the driver doesn't care. He is a private contractor.

fedex ground is handled by a different company than fedex itself. That 's why there is more mistakes.

.... from a current employee.......
Every FedEx that you see is different, there is FedEx express, ground, home delivery, custom critical, and freight. there are all owned by the same people but are operated differently because they are all different!
Heres the deal fedex ground operates how it sounds everything is moved by truck unless it weighs over 150 lbs. secondly the drivers for fedex gound are their own driver this means that they buy their own truck. they are responsible for drop offs as per the fedex ground in that area. depending on the size of your town, city... ect... Most drivers have a set route that they will take everyday. If you are having a problem with getting your stuff here are two possible solutions: 1) call 1800gofedex and explain your situation, they will gladly compemsate! or 2) leave a signed note in your door that reads something like this "to FedEx driver I give my permission to leave the package without me being here signed ___________" hope that helps..

(I edited Michael's quote for brevity)

I don't think one can sign away reasonable prudent expectations of delivery. In this case, I'd have filed a civil case against FedX..to heck with their "policy" or a claim.
