Robert, about two months ago, I think, someone did an experiment with baking their tops. They planed the joint until they where happy with it, baked it and then checked it again. It was an interesting thread. There were several others going about that time. You might want to dig them up. I know I am going to find them and print them out.

Interesting isn't it that we are starting to get interested in baking tops again. The old Spanish builders used to store their wood on the roof of their house, under either a metal or tile cover. Guess the weather conditions that wood went through in the Spanish sun. You can bet those tops got to nearly the temperatures we're talking about here very many times before they were used. History is the biggest source of innovation.

Me too Colin. And it also just goes to show: there's nothing new under the sun....

Go to sprucetonewood.com and click on the box for "drying..". Supposedly there are a lot of favorable test results analytically comparing oven dried tops to regular wood.

Colin,

Sorry guys for one post a little off topic, but $320,000.00 for a starter home, wow. You need to move to east Texas, nice new starter homes are still running from $90,000.00 - $120,000.00 with nice size, no State Income tax, and plenty of wide open0 spaces. I saw a small farm go for $1,000.00 per acre (around 90 acres) not long ago which included the house, (old but livable) barns (old but don't leak) and a tractor/equipment. I paid $27,000.00 for my first home in Dallas, Texas with a payment of $250.00 a month in the 70's, how in the world are these young people able to afford homes anymore?

Again, sorry guys,

Mike

One word Mike    HUMIDITY!

I grew up in southern VA where the summers were 99% and 99F or better.

We'll back to New Mexico before going back to having to take a cold shower to feel dry.

But thanks for the invitation.
