No it's not just you JJ.

Dave no offense intended here but I read the OLF to relax and enjoy it's content. Constant reminders of impending income tax deadlines is NOT a relaxing thing for me and harms my OLF experience.

I think that by now all interested parties would have seen this thread.

Thanks.
Hesh,
Quit Honestly I was shocked to see your post.

I love the preface "Dave no offense intended" what is that? you start off telling me you are going to offend me...it softens the blow?

I am not offended. I might be a little hurt. I never expected a sucker punch from you.

Look, my business is seasonal...NOW is Tax Season...Now is when people need the Tax Seminar. I bumped the thread only twice, any other upward movement was from people asking questions and making comments.

As far as everyone seeing it already...well...Lance has said the forum has over a thousand members or unique readers (not sure which) If that's so the thread read count indicates that not even half the people have seen or read the the thread.

Hesh, if it bothers you sooooo much to see the words "tax seminar" maybe you need to get the package!

I am sorry for ruining your experience here on the forum. That wasn't my intention. My intention is to make available a product that I truly believe will help ease the IRS burden at tax time for many people. But like the Hess oil truck, it's only here for a limited time.

How do you get along with the daily newspapers? That must realy shake you up. Do write them complaining about content...after all the paper isn't free...you paid for it. Wait, I know, you just read the parts you like right? Don't read my thread. There's only two weeks left and Tax Season is over. You can do it Hesh...I know you can...

none the less...I forgive you!

I believe my pre-apology suffices. If that's what Lance wants then it happens. Since it was pre-approved, an official announcement would have been a better way to handle it. Having the thread permanently labeled is another way important posts have been handled in the past. Had that been the case, you can be sure I would have kept my opinion to myself.

Whether anyone else wants to share my opinion is their choice...mine is an honest reaction to something that was heretofor unheard of...infomercials.

I appreciate the forgiveness and I also forgive you.

Hesh,

I am not going to continue this beyond this final comment.

Hesh, i don't know how you can speak for JJ. But that's fine. You mention that you "rarely" bump your posts. With all due respect and please don't be offended, perhaps your posts don't interest everyone or require a response from everyone.

Everyone on this forum pays Income Tax or files an Income tax return(or at least most do). That doesn't mean I am looking for a response from everyone. It does mean I would like for everyone to see what I have to offer. Wouldn't you like to have the most people available look at the guitar you are selling?

Because my thread is an offer to buy a product a response on the forum would not be necessary or likely, therefore in order to keep the thread alive an occaisonal bump is necessary. My topic isn't about luthiery it's about a topic directly related to luthiery (which is a business like any other). Many who might be interested may not respond at first. many people procrastinate and wait to the last minute to file their tax returns. I want to be avaiable to those people. What's the big deal?

Lance just posted a comment that told you he has given me permission. But even that is not good enough...you just want what Hesh wants...wow! How indignant is that?

Finally, you mention about others looking on and seeing my response to YOUR post. That's what hurts Hesh, you are complaining about my thread? what does that do to my potential sales? Thanks alot.

and I still forgive you!

I am going to let this thread die...I will replace it with a new one that doesn't offend you. So you won't have to see it everyday all day long...oh the suffering...

IMO...The real issue now is not whether you bump or not. The real issue is whether we should have sanctioned infomercials within the body of the main discussion forum at all.

I, for one, would like to see it kept more related to its original intent. Keep the commercial stuff separate. And realize that if approvals are granted for one person, requests by others are bound to happen. I see a slippery slope ahead.

I know that L&B get nervous when issues get hot but we're all adults and hopefully we can debate issues openly, objectively and professionally.

That's my opinion...of course I could be wrong.

JJ, I agree, objectively and professionally is a good way to keep a discussion that could easily get out of hand.

Regarding this particular thread, Brock and I discussed it at length, we both agreed that it did pertain to Lutherie, was relevant and also very timely. Therefore we suggested to Dave that he post it in the main forum.

This in no way (opens the door) for "infomercials" at the OLF. If someone comes to us with a similar idea/product/though or request we will talk about it and consider all the angles. If we think its a good thing and beneficial to the OLF, then we say sure! If not we say sorry.

Lance...Why not simply have a "Commercial" section where such posts are allowed. If not, I can see 10 rejected ideas for everyone allowed on the main forum. Rejected ideas will translate into rejected members who will fairly or unfairly charge favoritism. This could lead to charges of unfairness which none of us would ever wish to see. If you had a "Commercial" section where almost everything is allowed then it just may work. Going even one step further, it could provide a source of income to allow such posts for a finite period of time. Believe me, it will make your job a lot easier and decisions will be much more clear cut. In addition, you just might generate some revenue!

I personally would appreciate the option to see commercials rather than having them forced upon me.

Thanks for the opportunity to debate this openly.

I was annoyed also but, then, probably not as much as I annoy others.    I have a suggestion, Lance

For something like this why not just take Dave's statement and pin it to the top for the duration and make it so no one can post to it. Those interested can pm Dave directly.

Ron
...why not just take Dave's statement and pin it to the top for the duration and make it so no one can post to it.
Because that would indicate an endorsement, and our leaders aren't doing that. I think they just saw this as something that may help some luthiers. Anything that helps luthiers make a living is good in my book.

The offer is timely, pertinent to members here and, most importantly, optional; and if it doesn't get bumped, someone that needs it might miss it.

I'm surprised at the controversy. Dave didn't just ride in with a medicine show--he's one of us. Let's not forget that.

I've come into this rather late and really, by posting to it, don't like that fact that I bump it up further.

I too was annoyed by this thread, being of International flavor, yes I still pay taxes (and a considerable higher rate than most of you Americans) but don't really care about someones webinar on small business tax tips.

Nothing in this world is truly free. Everything has a cost including coming to the Olf for guitar building advise. The cost today was this thread, loosely (and I use that word loosely) related to guitar building.

I posted a thread in the Off Topics section about building greater OLF community, all around guitar building and started a community book exchange just to help build community here at the OLF. That was related to guitar building as well as uplifting the OLF community and trying to make it stronger, Still, I posted it in the off topics section because it was not directly related to luthiery, just as tax tips are not directly related to luthiery.

I don't really want to beat the dead horse to much more, but maybe a separate section for this type of stuff would be a good idea. They made a dedicated forum for off topic stuff as well as the Michigan Luthiers what ever (I've never looked in that forum, I'm not from Michigan) so maybe a commercial forum is a good idea, than commercial endeavors could go there and we could keep the guitar building strictly on this forum.
