Lance and Brock,

I forgot to say that I love it here and thank you for your hard work in putting together a great forum! I have learned so much from this forum.
Thank you for putting together guidelines for conduct that will make this place even better.

I'm not going to trash someone's house I've been invited to, am I? There are certain ettiquettes one must respect. As it is with forums.

I do agree with Anthony Z that asking for prayer is not a topic of faith or a
particular religious view or belief, but a call for general support from the
community that the OLF is......
You're kidding, right???
Asking for folks to make a request to their particular 'Supreme Being' (ie pray) is not religious?

If you want to ask people to keep someone in their thoughts, just ask- in those words.

Prayer is a religious act.

John
How do you consider asking for generic prayer not mentioning a particular religious view or belief qualify under your comment "to make a request to their particular 'Supreme Being'"?? I don't see that as a request to any PARTICULAR Supreme Being.

The reason that non-Religious rules are placed in many societies or public forums is to control and to stop arguments pretaining to faith and religion arguments and to avoid evangelism through that media.... not to stop someone to ask "please pray for me"!!

I would assume you wouldn't handle cash because of the "in God we trust" inscription?

This illustrates my point perfectly.

I have no issue with either point of view, however, it is clearly something that people take to heart and it is much simpler to leave it at the door.
Prayer is a religious act. Sighhhh! In the strictest and literal sense you are absolutely correct. (counting backwards from 10)...I stand corrected. If you want to play a game of literal reading and not intent then lets create what looks like a contract -- its what I do mostly for a living...it'll be 150 pages and will cost about $52,500 in legal fees assuming we get it right with the first draft. My estimate is over $1 million if agreement is to be reached my majority.

(My loose interpretation, prayer is what I do when stringing up one of my guitars for the first time )

Come on folks -- lighten up!!

Brock/Lance if its absolutely no religion -- no friendly offers of prayers - so be it. To be honest if this is to be the case it honestly doesn't offend me.

I like Sam's rule - no trashing the house you've been invited too.

Political discussions are (correctly) not allowed here.
However, you should note that I live in a country where there is separation of church and state, so our currency does not incorporate any religious messages.

Lance and Brock,
Thank you for posting these. I do believe they have been a long time comming. I think the first guideline pretty much sums up the other eight. Thank you also for providing a safe place for the free exchange of all ideas lutherie related.

You can't please everyone, but I'm not here to be pleased. I'm here to learn from others and share when I can.

The rulz are the rulz.

Hat's off to Brock and Lance for doing a great job.

There is an old saying, as long as there are history tests, there will always be "Prayer in Schools."

Same here, if a need becomes known, folks are gonna pray for that need, regardless. What are friends and PM's for anyway?

Great job guys, tuff as you have to be, we understand completely.

I'm secretly praying for the EDIT buttons to be restored.      Anyone care to join me?

Maybe in a new software package...

So far we are not having a lot of luck in getting someone who can easily import our database.

There are words that are considered to be swear words in North America and elsewhere, but are not considered to be so in Australia (we are opposed to rules on general principle, and pretty much everyone uses naughty words
).

Can you give us a list of the words we're not allowed to use? Just for a general reference, you understand.

I don't have an imaginary friend, so the religion thing doesn't bother me.

Good job on the rules, Lance and Brock!
As a long-time moderator on that "other" Forum, I can certainly understand why you have these rules. I know all about what it's like to deal with the problems that come up when there ARE no rules. There is a certain misconception that some folks have about the internet in general, they feel that the web is a "free" space so they are entitled to say anything or act in any way they please- but that isn't so and places that deal with many members need guidelines. Nobody likes guidelines, and a few inevitably force the necessity on us all. Our "other" Forum has been around a good long while, and many look down on it because of our rules- that is the biggest complaint about the MIMForum- now maybe folks will see the reasons for these rules are good ones. Myself, I am struck by how similar this rules list is to the "other" forum's rules.
I am glad to see the ban on religious and political discussions, because if you notice that these types of things are not tolerated in one Forum (like we did a long time ago) then folks will move to another Forum where it IS tolerated and then that type of thing runs rampant there since everyone who wants to post in that way will all congregate there.

I believe that rules are sometimes necessary to avoid conflicts and unneccessary arguments....religious or polictical comments can definitely end up that way.
If I don't like it, too bad... I'll find another place to go. Or I'll adhere to the rules which I meant for the good of the community.

BUT, comments like these are totally out of order... if you are an egnostic or an atheist its up to you but don't make comments aimed to hurt or to make fun of those that believe...

Mark, I agree with your comments, one thing though, these rules are not new to the OLF. Every single person that registers, read and accepts the same rules.
This new format more thought out and also more accessible, which is probably the most important thing.

I think we all now get the idea of what the rules are saying. I think its time to close this topic to a read only thread, and pin it to the top.

Thanks!
