Very interesting as usual, Shane. Your respect and enthusiasm for putting this tree to a wonderful use really comes out in your accounts of your work. Thanks for sharing.

Hey Shane-

I always enjoy seeing your harvest pics. I also like knowing there is more Lutz coming too. I'm sure everyone wants to know when these tops will be available.

Woo-Hoo, more Lutz.

Thanks-

Didnt mean to start a firestorm with the referral from the other forum, (which is the Forestry Forum) Of which I am a senior member. All in all, I got a good response to the posting over there except for referring to the forum as "another forum". Although all of the people there are in some way involved with forestry products, I have yet to find anyone who is working with harvesting tonewoods.

So if you are interested in the link over there and what they had to say about it, here is the link:

Once again, thanks for sharing the pictures!

Wow Shane I thought I was scoring lots of nice wood these days
well,.. I guess you could say we both are..
BTW
I have been hearing lots about flooding in the interior on the CBC,
and Ive heard tell of Terrace in that mix -
I hope your well out of the river valley, and your family is safe.
Sounds like it could get nasty over the next while for some folks in the river valleys of BC...
Nice Job Shane!!
Cheers

Great pictorial Shane.

Should I place an order now if I’d like some tops from that tree? These pictures would make a nice addition to a photo essay of the guitar build, from tree to finish, from timber to treble.

Hey Ken,

No worries, I was just not thinking that this info might be used as a falling tutorial, if it were that I would have posted some of the other pics I took and told the story a bit differently. It looks like the guys on the "Forestry Forum" know what this is all about and that is fine. My day job is as an Occupational Health and Safety Inspector for the Worker's Compensation Board of BC. Although I am primarily a marine industries guy, forestry is one of the biggest focuses for our organization. So we all have to have some ideas of proper falling techniques. I have many colleagues that came to the Board from falling. I can assure you that Gary is very experienced and does an almost flawless job, especially in this tree. One comment on the Forestry Forum about reducing fibre pull by cutting in a couple of inches on either side of the hindge is a major NO-NO in this wood. The strongest most tenacious wood is the sap wood on the outside of the tree. You can (and Gary did) bore the centre of the hindge on these large trees as he couldn't make the felling cut in one pass with his saw, the tree is too large, this practice significantly reduces fibre pull also. But removing wood from the outer edges of the hindge is a cause to shut the job down. Anyway, one of your members indicated that others on the 'Forestry Forum" could have done a better job of explaining the felling process and concede that I am sure they could. But I do hope that this thread was informative in the general sense in which it was intended. I think it was and your link to the "Forestry Forum" helps to further that, the comments over there were good. Thanks for your comments, I really do appreciate them and in my books no "firestorm" was started!!

Thanks again!

Shane

Great shots! And really nice to see a tree like that not going to 2x4's.
thanks and I hope you don't live too clost to the river. Good luck with the
high water.
Cheers, Danny

Yup, our town is on flood alert with a few houses on the river banks now "in the river". None have washed away that I know of but many are full of water right now. We had record snowfall this past winter that exceeded 330% greater than the long term average so this wasn't unexpected, we all just hoped against hope that it wouldn't happen. I live on a bench (NO!! Not a park BENCH, but a bench of land!!!sheeeesh!) so I am not anywhere near the trouble and half the continent would have to flood before we got wet but I will be checking in on some friends today and think I will likey be skipping out of work to help sandbag. Our city sewage treatment facilty is also under water now so most people in town will be without sewer and probably water for the next few days. Again, we are out of town and have a well and septic field so we are fine, but many of our friends are not! Nature is quite amazing really and hasn't been too kind of late. We recently (about 8 to 10 days ago) had a mud slide that closed the highway about 30 miles east of us. Well, yesterday, while removing the 30 foot deep torrent, they discovered a pick-up in the slide that fits the description of truck that contained two people who were overdue back from a visit to Terrace. The RCMP haven't said whether anyone was inside the vehicle but I expect the worst news today.

Stay safe all!

Shane

This is a cool post. I'm glad that you were able to fell a tree that should make both good wood and was in danger of falling by other causes.
