Bob, after a closer look, it could be worth something It looks like a replica of the Turin Shroud to me.

Just to clarify these are not acoustic sets. They are only 6" x 8". Large enough for rosettes or peghead overlays with enough for endgrafts too.

I want some of that too Bob. Like my Bro, enough for a rosette and a peghead overlay and an end graph. I am betting that you could slice that stuff and make killer binding. It would have to be pieced together but the grain is so busy that the joints would disappear. Did that once with burled elm.

I'm serious, if you're selling, I'm buying.

Bob, those are really spectacular samples! Can you tell us how the crotch is sawn to get grain like that? It appears to me the cut is made across the grain, so what we are seeing is mostly end grain.

I love sawing up odd pieces of wood to see what I can find. I've been working through a couple of sugar maples that were cut down in my front yard last year. I had fantasies that they would be full of curly grain but they are mostly straight. But around crotches, burls, and other 'disturbances' even the most plain grain maple can have some very interesting features.

Hope you don't mind me barging in here with some more pictures. The images below are a couple pieces that I planed smooth today. WARNING: these are not real bookmatch shots! I took a photo of the wood and then mirrored the image in Paint Shop Pro.

Tom I don't mind at all. Love to see beautiful wood pictures and those maple slices are awesome. You are correct in your observation. It is a horizontal slice.

Thanks Bob. I'm going to try some horizontal slices and see what I get.

Bob,
I was looking at the figured walnut on your site, and it seems that some of it is crotch wood. I have some amazing crotch wood that I helped cut up, and I had always assumed that it probably wasn't suitable for guitars. Was I wrong? S'pose I could try it and see.

Eric as long as the wood is dryed well and stable I don't see why you can't use it. Of course I would not attempt to use it for sides but you can match some suitable sides for color.
