Just to make sure that my point is not missed in the silliness, it was just to recommend that we all (including me) might want to check the overt expression of our religious beliefs at the door.

Those who are religious or spiritual always carry that "light", and it will shine. It will shine in the OLF's charity guitar's laborers and material donors. It will shine in the patient mentoring by the journeymen and masters of the apprentices and newbies. It will shine in the willingness to offer tips and tricks hard won by experience, which could easily be held as trade secrets. And, it will shine in the welcoming sense of camaraderie that includes gentle ribbing, jokes, and glimpses into our family lives, which keep the OLF from becoming sterile or one-dimensional.

Dennis

Wow, Dennis
That's pretty profound.
I agree, except I see nothing wrong with the signatures of some which contain religous reference or a post labeled "prayer" as that allows those who wish, to avoid that thread.     That said, though, I'll go along with whatever Lance decides. I haven't been here long but I sure have developed a very high level of respect for his wisdom.

HA! Lance starts this thread asking everyone to back off the flaming and get along, and he asks so politeley, and y'all can't even get along in -this- thread. And ya think you don't need rules and a moderator?

Y'all are going to need a long set of rules, and a moderator to slap hands and kick folks out soon. Just like all other successful forums.

Oh, the shame of it all......

Mario, we have rules and a moderator, but we've just misplaced them. Don't you worry, we'll find 'em and get 'em dusted off and back in their rightful place.

I can only think of about four or five knock down drag out threads that went on ad infinitum. Compared to the many many successful threads archived for anyone to see, this is one of the best forums ever. Most would agree.

Reading through the above posts, everyone seems civil, and somewhat kidding in their remarks. I think everything will be all right, don't you?

I noticed our friend Tippie too, getting really close to an apology. That takes a man to stand up in public and say I'm sorry, a big man.

John's first mistake was getting involved in a discussion about 12 string guitars. Noboby with sense messes with those things.

I agree with Bruce. Things were wonderful a few days ago.
If we'll just be civil and not panic all will return to normal. Or at least what's normal for this bunch. I really don't think the reins need to be tightened. Lance will give a firm tug when necessary.

Still working on my first neck.

Ron
Okay, how about Druids? Anybody know a Druid?
Yep! My wife and I have actually played at a Druid Solstice Festival, and regularly at the Eisteddfods, even though we are both card carrying Atheists. There's quite a few Druids over here, it is after all our old religion. It's on the increase now whereas church attendance is now down to way below 5% of the population.

I don't mind religion being mentioned, even if it's not a religion I agree with. But politics is a very divisive subject, probably even more so than religion in the context of an international forum like this one. As the endless squabbles about the Iraq war on many of the other music forums have demonstrated, it's very easy to forget that people from other countries can have a very different outlook on events from your own. I'd much prefer to stick to the things that bring us closer together.

If you want my .02 worth....

I think both topics should be avoided in any format. Nothing divides people faster or more vehemently than religion and politics.

Neither are necessary here.

Lance, I didn't understand, "TUG". Then I reread Old Man and now understand. So, this will be our new code word when someone's treading on thin ice, "TUG". In all caps too so there you go.

Definition of TUG: That's enoUgh Guys.

Bravo to Lance for keeping this forum on topic. There are LOTS of other
places on the internet to discuss virtually any subject.
Don,
Please notice the emoticons. It was a joke.
I knew that...sorry to appear as if I was criticizing...I wasn't.
It just rememinded me of a great person, and a bias I once had. No reflection on what you said...again, sorry if it seemed like I overlooked your emoticons.

For the record, if it matters... I prefer no real reference to religion or politics if I am reading a lutherie forum. Everyone has different view, and most think theirs is the ONLY view. If you think your political or religious reference is innocent, let me remind you that it is not. I take offense.

Unless it is about dovetails vs mortis and tenon, please check your righteousness at the door, since we are all unique in our views.

Lance, I've been watching all of this lately, and I think you have a GREAT attitude. You've done well in keeping this a welcoming forum.
