It's interesting to see how few build strictly nylon; however, it's even more surprising to see how many build both steel and nylon instruments. I have met several classical/flamenco players who will not pick up a steel string guitar, nor consider a builder who makes steel guitars-- I don't know why this is so, but I've met too many players out there with that mentality, probably groundless...

Probably because an experienced SS builder that does not have much classical experience will likely over build a classical. That with the fact that a larger percentage of classical players that buy hand-crafted instruments are professional concert players than those that by steel string. Therefore they want someone that is very proficient in classical building.

I got to spend an evening a couple years ago with Michael Chapdelaine the five time classical finger-style champion and head of Guitar Studies at the University of New Mexico. During this evening he set down his classical for a moment and picked up a Yamaha steel string and played the Beatle’s tune “Come Together”. Stopping half a measure into the song and saying “I’m 4ct flat on D, but this is a steel string so it don’t mater. I have spent 30 some years worrying with perfect intonation. I figure I am entitled to a little rock and Roll now and then” .

I build mostly Steel strings, but after meeting Graham McDonald at the last GAL convention, I fell in love with the Irish Bouzouki. So far I've built 3 zouks & I've been really pleased with them.
Only one classical to date, built for my wife... Also a really pretty teardrop dulcimer built for (same) wife over 25 years ago.

I'm finishing up my first which is a SS. I've started 2 and 3, both SS... I ultimately want to build an archtop...
