"Adult luthier"? Man, that's a low blow, JJ.
(Just how old do you think I am?)
(Don't answer that.)
What will I build? Hmmmm. An SJ, I'm pretty sure. Might put an Engelmann top on this guy, OR, a bearclaw Sitka top.
OR, perhaps--yes I think I'll do this--get me one of those nice Lutz spruce tops I keep hearing so much about.
Bind it with Bloodwood. What do you think?

Steve

Steve...I like the bloodwood bindings touch. As far as a top, I don't think you could go wrong with any that you mentioned. What color of sound would you expect from each one, or is most of the magic derived from the bracing and thicknessing?

One thing I noticed so far with the WFB back in the "boat" phase. I've never heard such low, loud and long tap tone before in a back at this stage. The thickness is .090" and the bracing is real light...lighter than Michael spec'ed in the plans. I just hope I didn't cross the line.

You guys who have made scores of guitars and can do it all are adult luthiers in my book! Of course, chronologically, you're still a pup!

In my experience, fundamentally the sound is from the top. The coloration is from the back / sides. What the bracing and thicknessing contribute are to enhance or stifle what the top is already trying to do. As for different species of top wood, yes, they have different sounds, but they will all sound like one of your guitars, JJ, when you build with them.
You know, my experience with that other Bubinga guitar I built was so rewarding. I think I've stated this before, but that was the best sounding guitar I've built. We need to convince the public of its merits!

Thanks again,
Steve

Yeah, thanks...I think.
What I'm afraid of is that counter is proof positive that I need to get off my duff. Or at least off the computer.
Maybe after a thousand posts, we should be required to re-register? Sort of like Bruce Dickey did, new name and all. He made such a clean start,he even moved to Antarctica to post!
