is Stat a technical term?
Kind of. It's med-speak for the Latin "Statim," meaning, "immediately."

Here's another neat idea using aluminum tubing for go-bars.
Comes from frets.com, Kenny Hill. I've used these in his workshop, and they work good.

Think about it, precise pressure application every time. I'm not joking.

I do it a little differently, I use the spreaders to set the bracing notches in the sides (for me it's the last part to go on), I don't cut all the way through for my braces but prefer to have a little tension on them when fitting the back. When it fits nice and tight, I take out the spreaders and use a soundhole clamp like Cumpiano to hold the top down (all this is in a mold of course) and make sure that I can actually pop the back on without too much effort.

Then it's glue, slam the back on (double checking the fit) and wrap the thing with rope like an idiot . I actually make reference marks with a pencil to make sure my back lines up as I expected.

It may not be the best way to do it but I have large hands and wrists and I just can't get my hand in far enough to pull out spreaders so I avoid it..

Cheers

Aluminum--nature's wonder-metal!!!

So, Chris, something's missing in your pictorial--how do you keep the tube from sliding down the dowel?

Carlton,

Good question! Look again, the problem is keeping the dowel from sliding 'out of the tube'. Unfortunately, I didn't have much time to study them during the class. I think he 'crimps' one end of the tube to secure the spring inside, and sort of press fits the end of the dowel 'inside' the other end of the spring to keep it from sliding out of the other end of the tube. If you're really interested, contact Kenny Hill, maybe he'll explain it.

Bruce's comment about "Wingnut Allthread GoBars" is actually a 'good extrapolation' of this idea, combined with Robbie's 'spreaders'. My minds 'in gear' and working on it...........right behind Bruce. Thanks Bruce! That's why I like to 'throw stuff out here', sometimes 'good things bounce back'.

Robbie,

Not mine, I 'clipped' those pics from frets.com. Actually,
that bracing scheme belongs to Robert Ruck, and I believe that's Kenny Hill in the pics. I think Kenny makes a Ruck model, and has some sort of agreement with him. Check Kenny's website hillguitar.com, there's an article about it.

Love your 'wingnut spreader' idea, O'Brian Wingnut GoBars next.

I thought about that, too, but couldn't see any crimping in the photo. Gotta plug one end of that puppy somehow!

Yeh, I remember using some that were crimped at one end for sure, but it seemed like some were not. The really important part is getting one end plugged with the spring secured inside so it doesn't slide out. If the dowel slides out, it's not a big deal to hold it in, although it is nice if it doesn't. Next time I'm in Felton, I'll stop in and ask how it's done.

About all that's needed is some kind of wood, rubber, plastic, or whatever, protective tip, and they're 'good to go' as go bars, I would think. Might be 'pricey' compared to fibreglass rods though. But the precise pressure control, and adjustabliity might be worth it. I'm going to try them. Thanks Bruce!

maybe they're not tubes, but round stock that has been drilled. Would take some time, but it would work, and the plug would never fall out... could do it on a drill press or a lathe.
