PERFECTIONNISTS AND NEAT FREAKS
Serge,

There's only one "n" in "perfectionists."

I thought it was Ench.    (I hope you understood the irony in my previous post. It was a nudge at perfectionists, not at you, who seems to have excellent command of a language not native to you!)

I could fill a book with the mistakes I have made and thought I was the only one. Usually the result of working too fast and lack of patience but getting better each time.

At first I thought it was the tools so I bought every tool I could get my hands on. Including but not limited to Performax drum sander for thicknessing, band saw, planner, joiner, lots of cam clamps, special japanese saws, sharpning stones and on and on and on. Then there is the library of books, video tapes and web articles. And adding to that the quest for learning by lurking on OLF and other sites and then going to the ASIA Symposium for the past few years.

All of this to have a relaxing hobby!

Well I have gotten pretty good at making sure the ceterline back inlay actually lines up with the heel and end graft. Have gotten pretty good at shaving braces and not breaking sides during bending (oh yeah, I now use a heating blanket and bending jig from John Hall).

Am much better at making sure the soundhole is where it should be before taking the dremel to it. Even have had a couple of near flawless rosettes.

I have made every mistake you could possibly make. I have cut a few guitars in half like they do at Martin when they get a defect. I have cut necks in half to use them for templates becasue of a flaw and trying to turn a lemon into lemon wine.

Well enough said. The good news is like Edison once said when asked if he was discouraged after failing many times at solving a problem. "I have done this experiemnt 1,000 times and while I have not succeded, I now knoe 1,000 ways that don't work and getting closer to the answer" Or something like that - but however you say it - this is the reality. It's two steps forward and one step back. As long as it isnt one step forward and two steps back - you make progress.

I usually make bonehead mistakes when I'm trying to go too fast. There have been plenty!

I have gotten into the habit of stopping often and thinking thru.

I mark wood, measure and plan many times because as they say, there always seems to be time to do something right the second time. I'm catching on slowly, but things do seem to go faster now.

One of my friends told me about going slow, at first, in playing guitar, because if you go fast and make mistakes, those mistakes set up patterns in the mind that can be hard to break. He was right, but it applies to just about everything.

It's a lot different, than most of the time of, "Stop Before You Think"

This sounds like a journal moment to me That is one of the things that I think is great about keeping a daily build journal. If you get in the habit of stopping and making journal notes at the start and end of every thing you do. The act of taking the notes slowes you down and makes you think things through.
