Any reason not to use good ol' Minwax stains? I've used them before on
several (furniture) projects with good results - wide array of colors,
generally locally available (at least in the US), inexpensive, mix well if you
need an "in between" color...

As far as the epoxy goes, I'd have to agree that the Z-Poxy does pop the grain a hecuva lot. I used it on my primavera and it really did pop the grain, especially where it had some flamed streaks in it.
