It looks like it could be Mulberry...it gets black in the core like that.

Do you know if it flowers or drops berries? Is it fast growing (as in a weed)?

Without a picture of the bark it is tough to tell.

How soft is the wood...I dont think it is butternut but the color is close. If it is hard and tough it could be locust

I am still leaning towards mulberry.

Not mulberry, or hackberry. But there is a town not far from here named after this tree.

Well my neighbor had to cut down an old Redbud tree, so I asked him for a section of one of the larger trunk sections.
Redbud grows wild in this area, and is used as an ornimental. The wood looks interesting, but a bit small for backs and sides.

Wow Al, you really "stumped" us good! My guess was russian olive, or honey locust, but I wasn't sure that tree grows in your area. Way to go!

Ive got a nice honey locust burl drying. It's about 2 yr old. I plan to use it for an electric guitar drop top.
