You might try 60 grit, it actually makes quite a difference from 80 in my limited experience. I just use a scraper or ROS after that.

I just use a lower end Delta 1-1/2 hp dust collector, it seems to do the job pretty well, so long as it's hooked up direct and not through a bunch of gates and elbows, etc...

What Jon says will help immensely with cocobolo, as it scrapes beautifully. With a good sharp scraper you can take it from a 60 grit finish to smooth as a baby's bottom in no time.
Paul and Bruce, regarding blowing the dust,

I am not sure if I understand, does it just blow the dust into the collector?
Creating a dust generator is a bad idea.
Ken, email Doolin for a picture he has it up on his site but he must link you to it. What he does is pressurize a 3/4 inch PVC pipe added to his drum sander with tiny holes drilled all along the pipe.

The blower streams cause the dust to become airborne within the dust hood. (all dust is contained) Once airborne it is sucked into the dust collection system. He uses a wet/dry vac to power the puffing tube....

Claims it works. Maybe Paul has installed one he can shoot you a picture of easily? Dunno....

Here's Mike's article: http://www.doolinguitars.com/articles/blower/
I've done it and it works great. I had to make a few changes most importantly I had to use 1/2" copper as there is much less room inside the general than the grizzly.

Interesting concept!   Wonder if a long brush mounted between the drum and the following roller would work?
(To prevent dust cakes from going under the roller)

Here's what I've done. I've got it ripped apart at the moment because the circuit board on the sander took a dump.

This pretty much shows the blower itself. I picked it up at a vacuum cleaner shop.

Here is the plumbing. I wanted to have it blow on the trailing edge of the drums which is why they are placed where they are. The they are angled a bit so they blow the dust backward and the drums kick it up into the DC. Works great.

Thanks Paul, I guess the blower hose attaches up top where they protrude from the hood? Interesting addition to a great machine...
