Hi folks, after watching a video that was posted by my good pal Rod True, i decided to give that a try and the results were quite amazing for my very first try at sharpening chisels, better late than never they say huh?

I purchased 2 glass plates from Lee Valley and inserted them in a foldable jig of sort then i proceeded with different grits, dry on the first lower grits and with water on the higher ones, polished them to a mirror sheen at the end, i still need a bit of practice but with good elbow grease and good will, i think i'll have them all sharpened very soon, thanks Rod!

Her's the jig

Here's the result!

Thanks for tuning in!

Serge

Hey Serge,
That looks like a great set up to hold the glass.
Great idea!

Thanks Jim, i used mirror hooks?clamps? plastic thingies anyways, they help keep the sandpaper down in the corners and the plates down on the surface.

J and others, just so you know it's a video file from an article in woodsmith magazine.

Now Serge, that looks great. Did you do them by hand or with a honing guide?

If you don't have a honing guide, I would suggest getting one. Even a cheap one is better than going at it by hand. Makes for a more even bevel and for a nice square edge. If you have one already, just ignore me

I must say thought that that chisle sure looks good Bro. Rod True39090.0581944444

Excellent! I just picked up a Veritas Sharpening Guide system and can't wait to use it. I guess I'll be headed to Home Depot to get some glass this week.

Rod, i do have a sharpening guide but how could i ever ignore the guy that delivered me from my ignorance?

I have the same exact honing guide as the guy in the video but mine seems to be wobbly a bit, i am seriously considering buying another one from Lee Valley that would certainly be more sturdy and accurate although pricey!

Uh.....sorry Serge, I see the honing guide in the corner of the first picture.

Great job

Everyone raves about the scary sharp sharpening system but unfortunately one thing that isnt widely publicised is the fact that the system just doesnt work if you dont have hairy arms...

Thanks for the tips Todd and i should have mentionned your name in my intro, you're one of the guys who always teach me a lot of new things, next will be the planes and plane irons!

i thought of buying spray adhesive at first but didn't know how well it would scrape off the glass plates and was afraid to damage my Lee Valley plates that are milled to 0.001" flatness?

What is SS Todd please?

Ain't got no dawg around here, just a Bear!

Ok Martin, what's with the hairy arms, you want to see me do some testing before the camera?

Serge, Todd is referring to the scary sharp method, SS.

Your system looks great.

Thought you'd never ask mate!! What I think every one here would like to see is a photo of your scary hairy arm prior to sharpening the chisel...and a second photo of your hairless arm after you've run your scary sharpened chisel over same.

There's scary sharp...and then there's scary hairy sharp.

Thanks Lillian, must have been the lack of coffee this morning.

Todd, sounds like your system is easier than the SS, care to comment more on this please?

Martin, over my dead body will someone cut my fur with a chisel, ya hear! I'm such a wimp!

Great, Serge. I have the same honing guide you have there and I agree it is too wobbly. The wheel thingy is too narrow. I'm ordering the one from LV. I've got to spend at least a day sharpening everything in my shop.

I was lucky enough to get the Jet water shaepening system for Christmas.... it was the only thing I really wanted and needed since my sharpening skills are as good as my ballet skills!

Aw heck, you've reminded me I've gotta sharpen up my chisels for my neck carving...

I use a diamond stone, a finer oilstone and strop with very fine valve grinding paste on leather...

Serge, the results are great!! That chisel is gleaming!!!

May I ask you why you use glass? I guess I need to search the archives....in the meantime, I'm gonna sharpen my chisels this evening before I get too tired...

The glass just gives you a perfectly flat surface.
