Since a few here asked.
This is where I am with these. The maple one is in body
form and waiting for me to bind it. The Harp mando
needs the top bracing, I spent more time thinking about
the bracing layout, then it will take to actually brace.
Braces are made and ready just need to get to it.
I have three guitars going that keep getting in the way.

Hope you enjoy the pic's

Tom

WOW very cool work Tom, it's coming along pretty nicely too! I love your cauls under the gobars, they look pretty sturdy.

Looking forward to the next pics, very inspirational!

Thanks for spoiling me on this Monday morning my friend1

Tom, those are nice looking boxes and very ambitious as well.

Thanks for the pics update. That harp mandolin is killer. I just love all the wonderful curves in the rim. Very original looking.

Thank you for your comments and interest.
The Harp Mandolin has been fun. I am curious
how the harp arm will affect the sound.
The design is loosely based on a 1916 Larson style 35.

Tom,

Really nice work! Your harp mando looks mighty interesting, and should have a unique sound. Great idea!

Thank you for your kind comments.
I should have the harp mandolin top, braced and the body
assembled in the next couple of days. Binding the end
of the "arm" part of the body could be a fun challenge.
I have been thinking about that since I started it.

Tom, I like them both! But I really like the oval soundhole in the A style mando. Something about that always grabs my attention. Great job.

Scrolling back to the picture I hadn't thought of that. How do you plan on doing it....route close and into the corner with a grammel/chisel?

The harp mandolin top is some 1996 engelmann I harvested
here in montana. Very stiff after 10 years of aging.

Dave
when I first drew the design I planned on a round soundhole.(easier) but i felt the oval looked better.

Anthony
yep where the router binding cutter wont go hand tools will. I use a violin style purfling cutter with one
knife just like the gramil.

I really like the innovative shape of the harp-mando, and the symmetry of the topwood grain!!

Sam
you noticed the curve in the top grain. I like the way it looks also. Just looks right on this body shape.

Dave W
That is one wild looking little instrument. Building it
would'nt be a problem, but learning how to play it and
writing a nice tune on it would. I would have to leave
that up to you.

Dave A
Thanks for the nice comment and interest.

Alain
Glad you like it. I'll update the progress pic's as
much as I can. It sure has been a fun project.

Thanks again, one and all.

Tom
