Most glues seam to soften again at around 150-170*F. One thing you want to be careful of is drying out the wood to much and prying at it with the removal blade/knife. I've taken a few backs off and also a few neck and tail blocks off and found that just a bit of water on a rag will keep the wood moist enough as to not crack or split, this will also of course create some steam which will help soften the glue too. |

good advice from rod. also make sure you don't try to lever the wood to break the glue join. use putty knives or pallette knives which have been ground thin on your belt sander or grinder and slip them between the wood, leapfrogging them so as not to allow the glue to reset. |
what had you planned to use to provide the necessary heat?
The wife's iron works pretty good. Good enough in fact, that she now has a new one and I have the old one permanently assigned to shop duties. I've removed a few fingerboards and one back and one headplate with it. |

Michael, and others, I too used a clothes iron, set it to linen, about 5 very damp tea towel layers between wood, let it steam about 15-20 secs. and voila. Thanks, |
