Did everyone here get an email spam from Akustikwood.com this weekend? I was wondering if anyone actually knew of them or had dealt with them?

The company is in Turkey, near Istanbul. It looks like they are trying to get into direct marketing of Mediterranean Cypress to the US market. Their prices are good - 42 euros/set (includes shipping) for top grade with a minimum order of 200 euros. Sounds too good to be true, compared to what the material markets for in the US. They will also ship on approval (i.e., you pay after you have received it).

If anyone knows anything, please let us know. Their website is pretty good. You have to email them for pricing, though, which I did, and they responded first thing their next business day.

Jim

I got the email. They claim to have P. orientalis...

I'd be interested to hear if anyone orders from them and how it goes.

Looks interesting......

Have to email for their price list. How come I don't get spam that might be useful.

I've got 4 kids so obviously I don't need the usual products being offered!!!

.....I'm a woman, I don't need the usual products being offered!!!

I wouldn't trust cold-call emails. There are better and less invasive ways of marketing stuff, and the kosher companies never cold spam.

In the meantime, I'll stick to already established luthier suppliers..unless someone is brave enough to buy off these kung fu companies...

I wouldnt trust any email after the OLF got hacked here recently, the ppl who did this may have been able to get a copy of the emails for everyone here possibly. Although I dont really know the extent of the invasion, Ive heard that sort of thing happening before.

Cheers

I ran a couple of quick "Ho Ho" tests on Akustikwood.com. It is unlikely these guys are spammers. Their URL is what it proports to be and the "feel" of the web site is pretty good. You would have to be a particularly dedicated spammer to setup one with all the wood photos and know what you are doing. There are not enough luthiers to warrant going to this trouble to steal from us. That said, buyer beware as in all transactions.

Whats a "Ho Ho" test?

In a few weeks, I'll play guinea pig and order a couple soundboards from them, and report back.

Ah, the infamous "Ho Ho" test. Jargon in my world that refers to whether you go "ho, ho" when you see something - in other words is it so silly to be a joke or not.
