Hi Folks, I am at my wifes mothers house for the day. We have not had power since yesterday morning and the est is that we will be out 1 or 2 more days. I went and bought a generator so we have light, hotwater and TV!!! But our furnace wont work with it. I have a small space heater that will keep the chill off. I should be back on line soon, until then 'Behaaave' |

The cats away the mice will play!!!!!! Actually I hope you get power soon. We have a relative cold wave here in San Diego. It actually got below 40 degrees for the 1st time in generations!!!! I am sure we will get no sympathy |

Ive been watching the news - & while its uncharacteristically cold and snowy here where I live - it looks positively horrifyingly disgustingly cold where there have been recent and ongoing ice storms  - now all you guys know what its like for people in Quebec - they are often plagued with ice storms in winter time!

Stay safe and as warm as possible. Remember, it is ok to burn some wood for heat, just check it for figure and flash first.

You are so right Charlie, i'm thinking trading my van for skates here!
Lance, stay warm and safe and beware of the dangers of a second way of heating(fumes, vapors in the house etc) we want you in great shape when you get back home! Serge |

Ouch... I think we've dropped below zero, erm, three times this winter/fall. And only just at that. Average temperature has been around the 8 degrees centigrade mark, which is quite frankly absurd, but not altogether unpleasant. |

Hang in there Lance. We have around a 4" layer of ice on everything around here too. But at least we still have power. I have a mound of ice that is approx 3' tall across my front porch. I tried to chip a little of it away but just gave up and came back in where it is warm. |

Ok, so what is an "ice storm"? How is that different from a snow storm? Snow is just ice too isn't it? We get rain occasionally but that's about it. I feel like I'm missing out 
It's summer down here, going to be a nice warm (100F) weekend. I'm gonna fire up the bbq, get the kids in the pool. Might put some ice in a drink.... |

Paul You ain't missed nuthing brother. Ice storms are caused by rain and freezing temps together. The water freezes on everything it touches. Trees get coated with ice, get heavy and come crashing down tearing down powerlines and punching holes in roofs etc. etc. Roads are covered with a layer of clear (usually) ice that is just impossible to drive on. It's much more disruptive than a show storm. But, I that 100 degree temp sounds a little too hot for comfort. |

We've only had one very mild frost here so far this winter and I have roses still in bloom in the garden! On the news today was a piece about Moscow having the warmest winter in memory, no snow in Red Square at all, even their bears are coming out of hibernation. Looks like all the cold has headed towards Lance, he must have been a really bad boy! Colin |

Yes it is crazy up here too. No snow until just a couple of days ago, but it is just the wet, boring snow that disappears as soon as it comes , not the fun, fluffy stuff that you can go skiing on. On the bright side, my snowblower is broken but who cares! |

Wow, that sure does look pretty. Looks plenty cold too. Thanks Bob. I can see that there'd be lots of weight in that much ice. Gotta create all kinds of problems... So it sounds like these ice storms are some sort of temperature inversion, where it's below freezing on the ground but higher up is warmer so that rain can fall. That sound about right? Hope you're keeping well Lance. |

Paul B, you are right about that. When it's actually cold up top, that's when snow hits. We, most uncharacteristically, got very nice snow. And today it was 15 and sunny. While waiting on glue to dry, I spent most of the afternoon on the golf course (skiing of course). Wonderful day. |

Just started getting the cold temps here today near Allentown,Pa. No percipitation yet, but I just heard the word snow on the news but ofcourse I have to wait till the weather forcast. We keep a tray of water in the front and it had about an inch of ice on top! This is Southern California! FIZZ FUZZACRAPIT! This isn't supposed to happen! I'm going to write Governor Scharzenegger, or whatever his name is, and complain!
On a less jovial side, we lost most of our citrus crop. Another bummer for guys that have to work in the field! |

I've been following the news stories about all this weather...the photographs of all the ice storms is simply astonishing. Some of it looks like snow...I saw a photograph of a car covered in what looked like snow, but was packed with ice. No-one could get into the car save a very hot implement and hours of patience.... The worst "snow" we ever had here in the UK was 20 years ago when the school bus broke down, and much to my great delight, we had to walk the three miles home across open countryside in 2ft snow... |
