The only place I've been able to find Hide Glue granules online in Australia is the Ubeaut Pearl Hide Glue available at Carbatec or Ubeaut. I've rung both companies to try and find out how strong this glue is, but nobody has any idea. Do any of the Australian Luthiers out there use this stuff?

BTW, we can't have hide glue sent to us from the US. Customs don't like it... don't ask me how I know (thanks again Dave!)

Also, has anyone heard of Gesso? Down the bottom of the page I've linked to there is a bit on using shellac with talc in it for pore sealing. I haven't heard of this before, nor seen it discussed on this forum. Does it or would it work? Could it be used for guitars?

I bought some HG from LMI. No problems getting it into the country, customs even opened the package for a look and left their little leaflet in there.

gesso is a sizing used to stretch canvas over frames before it was painted (like Leonardo da Vinci would use)

Gee, don't you guys down under have a proliferation of large, hopping marsupials. A little rendering down ought to get you a batch of hide glue.

We tried roo glue Hank but the joints had a tendency to spring after a while. This of course makes one so hopping mad that that they are likely to go bounding across the shop in a kangatankerous mood booming out all sorts of obscenities.

We just found it less trouble to grind the buggers up and sell'em off as burger meat

Oh, LMI for me too, but request a shipping quote or you may get a HUGE shock.

I know nothing about u-beaut pearl hide glue. But you can contact Neil via email or PM on the ubeaut woodwork forums and he'll tell you what he knows. He's the guy who owns u-beaut, he's a good bloke and is happy to help.

I got mine from Tools for Working with Wood in the States. They sell it in all sorts of gram strengths.

I talked to Neil today on the phone. You're right, he's a nice guy and quite prepared to have a bit of a chat. It's always best to go straight to the top! But he also didn't know what gram strength was. He told me that his Pearl Hide glue is just the traditional hide glue used for hundreds of years.

I may just have to get some and experiment. Problem is I have no benchmark to compare against. What would be a good test?

Now I just have to get a baby bottle warmer and some plastic bottles...

Go to the Ubeaut woodworking forums and put up a post there, you should get a response from someoone about Ubeaut hide glue. You may even get the owner of Ubeaut answering your query.

I use a leg wax heater for cooking up hide glue. Will fish out make and model tomorrow when Im out in in the workshop.

        I've been using that pearled glue on my piano work for years and have had no problem with it.I can't tell you it's strength rate,, no one seems to know,, (or care ). It's only when I read of strength ratings on this forum did I get the L.M.I. stuff . At least that way I know I've got the best known strength rating for building guitars, and it wasn't a hassle to order from L.M.I. . I think the shipping is about thirty bucks or so for three pound . That's still very cheap glue.

I don't think that Stradivarius, Panormo or Torres knew the gram strength of their glue either, and their instruments seem to have lasted pretty well. I think we can make too much fuss over the particular gram strength.

OK I do know the gram strength of my glue, but didn't until it arrived in the post, as Russell rustled it up for me.

You may already know this, but what you want is 192 gram-strength, high clarity hide glue. It's what LMI sells, and as Bob mentioned, it's also available at Tools for Working Wood (at less cost!). If you buy at TFWW, know that they have two varieties of 192 gram--get the high clarity.

BTW, French polish advocate/expert Eugene Clark wrote that the only FP finishes he's seen that had failed on old guitars were the ones that had HG used as a filler or sealer.

Any comments from Robbie on this one? On his DVD he uses HG to seal and age tops prior to FP'ing same.

Ouch! I didn't know that. I've been hoping to come up with the bucks to buy Robbie's finishing DVD, too. Didn't want to step on any toes, but that's what Clark said, nonetheless.
